Half of Americans Live With Gay Recognition Laws

Nearly half of all Americans live in a state or municipality that recognizes same-sex couples' relationships.

Approximately 140 million Americans live in the 15 states and Washington, D.C., as well as the dozens of cities and counties that recognize couples through marriage, civil unions, or domestic partnerships, according to Box Turtle Bulletin.

Writer Timothy Kincaid said the antigay National Organization for Marriage "can proclaim 'victory' when they have an election in California or Maine, but this ball is rolling and the momentum is in the direction of recognition."

Billy, I doubt that DOMA would have ever seen the light of day. Congress is way too conservative to consider it. However, we were right to expect ENDA, which we did not get. We got the Hate Crimes law passed, and that's a victory to be thankful for. I believe that we will be seeing more to come from this Congress yet.

Jonathan, can you name me one President in the past 40 years who was not backed, if not owned by corporate interests? I am having a hard time thinking of any that truly had the best interests of the "American people" in mind. More often what they seem to have in mind is pleasing their corporate masters and spinning it to look like they are doing what is best for the people. Ralph Nader said it best, democrats and republicans should just merge like the corporations they are and become the republicrats.

I would just like to make a few points. Social change is happening and I live in the south. I see it here. this keeps that very dim light still it. However we do have major issues on our hands when it comes to our government. Obama lied... over and over and over. We all know this. He is backed by corporations and money. The American people are NOT is #1 priority and the same could be said for our Congress. In South Carolina, an amendment is trying to be passed to state that a relationship id defined by man and woman. Trust me LGBT community. I'm doing everything in power to stop this. And btw... do NOT accept civil unions or anything less. Equality is NOT separation of rights. Gays will not get on their knees and ask their significant others to "CIVIL UNION" them. Ridiculous.

What is sad is that we an overwhelmingly democratic legislature in DC with a supposed pro-equality president. Things like DADT, ENDA and DOMA could have been dealt with last year, now we have an election year so many would be allies are going to be hard pressed to support LGBT causes and so we will probably end up waiting- again. On top of everything it looks more and more likely that the congress will once again be in Republican hands after the mid-term elections so we can nix any kind of improvement if that happens. Also has anyone else noticed that on the campaign trail Obama supported full civil unions but now says the issue should be left to the states? Face it, we were played and now we are reaping our reward.

That's right. Legislation is not inevitable. But natural societal change is.
