Ex-Catholic Charities Exec Slams Benefits Call

A former priest and top executive at Catholic Charities criticized the social service agency Wednesday for its decision to drop future health care benefits for employees’ spouses rather than comply with a new marriage equality law in Washington, D.C.

According to The Washington Post, former chief operating officer Tim Sawina sent a letter to the Catholic Charities board in which he said the new policy declared by Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl would hurt agency recruitment and cause the organization to lose respect.

"Some, including the archbishop, have argued that by providing health care to a gay or lesbian spouse we are somehow legitimizing gay marriage," said Sawina, according to the Post. "Providing health care to a gay or lesbian partner — a basic human right, according to Church teaching — is an end in itself and no more legitimizes that marriage than giving communion to a divorced person legitimizes divorce, or giving food or shelter to an alcoholic legitimizes alcoholism."

Archbishop Wuerl, with support from the Catholic Charities board, decided this week to cut benefits for spouses of all future employees, new spouses of current employees, and spouses of current employees not on the health plan already. The move was designed to avoid recognition of same-sex partners, which would be in opposition to church teaching.

According to the Post, the archdiocese called Sawina’s letter an inaccurate portrayal of the church's position and said his appeal to the organization's board of directors would be fruitless because the board cannot overturn the archbishop's decision.

To be fair to the SAVE Dade folks, they were harrassed by police a bit by Hialeah police during the 2000 elections. They were told to move across the street and they allowed opposition to remain at the poll collecting signatures, so the environment was already a bit of a hotspot. I was stationed over at the Orange Bowl in the Little Havana area.

While the Church itself has posted stuff that has been inaccurate in the past about opposition, it's members aren't out on a rampage to destroy an opponent. They stay on topic and simply state things from the popular instructional viewpoint. PATIENCE is a virtue worth having if you decide to enter this arena of dialogue.

David - this is one of the examples I was waiting for someone to post. The organized gay rights movement can be summarized in your sample. It's probably better compared to a Karl Rove/Dick Cheney approach to solving political issues. Everything is done to destroy the identity of opposition regardless if the movement understands the intricacies of the opponent or not. This is definitely not an approach MLK would have taken when dealing with those that didn't share his viewpoints. When I used to work for SAVE Dade in Miami as a volunteer, some members -- short of just attacking opposition -- would go up and harass other folks gathering signatures at voting polls. One guy dropped his list and one person from SAVE went up and grabbed the signatures and ripped the page. That's not democractic, that's just being a thug. Your own hate isn't allowing you to see how the Church operates and we've already been pretty descriptive on this forum. I guess you prefer to use your gun with blindfolds.

Lee - you post this stuff as if nobody has ever read this before. Although you need to read through it with a grain of salt, there is truth in what he says depending on the perspective you look at it. While not representative of the gay scene as a whole, we don't ostracize behavior that should probably be ostracized. Barebackers, bugchasers, meth (partiers) etc. we don't want to seem repressive towards those segments. By not saying anything you open the door for others to say the community is not healthy. And in reality, if we lived in a perfect Catholic society, HIV wouldn't exist. But we all have free will.

Verner, Jose, you are fools...sorry, but that is the truth. "the church doesn't hurt me" "my church lets me and my partner take communion" even "the entire actions of a church leadership can't make the church bad" (?????). YOUR MONEY and TIME that you donate to this hate group have been funnelled into causes taking away my rights. How selfish you two are! Just because you cannot get over your ludircrous, insane and unjustified fear of hell you think it is ok to donate money and time to a hate group that turns around and funds dishonest campaigns to take away your very own rights, to harm efforts to stop the spread of aids, to continue to goad people into overpopulating the planet. Shame on you, you selfish fools. Life is too short, time to wake up, dump the delusional beliefs and start doing some good. You claim you and other catholics do good. Fine, I say you would without the cult. If you keep funding it, you are the evil we fight!

Verner...you really are a deluded moron!!! The spiritual has absolutely nothing to do with religion or fairy tales. Poor you, no angels, no saints and when you die, YOU ARE DEAD!!! Deal with it, fairy tales will not change that.

AND HOW DOES THE POPE HEAL THE SICK? BY KILLING THEM! "A Christian can never remain silent," he said, after being greeted by President Paul Biya, Cameroon's ruler for the past 26 years. But he sparked controversy by telling reporters that HIV/Aids was "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem". The solution lay, he said, in a "spiritual and human awakening" and "friendship for those who suffer". Some activists were dismayed by the approach, saying condoms were one of the few methods proved to stop the spread of HIV. Rebecca Hodes, of the Treatment Action Campaign in South Africa said: "His opposition to condoms conveys that religious dogma is more important to him than the lives of Africans." The Catholic Church is a proven killer and enemy to all gay people who have any trace of self-preservation and self respect.

THIS IS WHAT THE HEAD OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SAYS ABOUT GAYS "We must have great respect for these people who also suffer and who want to find their own way of correct living. On the other hand, to create a legal form of a kind of homosexual marriage, in reality, does not help these people. " Benny the Pope ETN asked the Bishop [Janusz Kaleta of Holy See, the Apostolic Administrator of Atyrau] if the Vatican's stand was clearly against [gay] tourism, and the Bishop answered: "The church teachings are from the Bible. If we change this teaching, we will not be the Catholic Church. Don't expect the Catholic church to change these issues, because it is our identity." When asked if the Vatican is open to dialogue about welcoming such homosexual groups of tourists in the future, Bishop Kaleta responded that "such demonstrations are just not ethical. Go somewhere else!" Publisher Steinmetz clarified that what was meant by gay travel was traveling not as a demonstration!
