Roseanne Attacks Osmond, Mormon Church

In her blog entry titled “Marie Osmond’s Poor Gay Son Killed Himself,” comedian Roseanne Barr suggests the son of the popular entertainer committed suicide due to depression caused by the Mormon Church over being a closeted gay man.

Barr writes, “The Osmonds still talk lovingly about their church, saying nothing about its extremely anti-gay Crusade.”

She has strong words for Marie in particular, stating, “Please don't talk about how your faith in your church has helped you get through this one! Please get some integrity and tell that church of yours that you will leave it and stop giving it ten percent of your money if they don't stop trying to destroy your kids' and all gay people's civil rights and dreams and hopes.”

Since Osmond’s son Michael Blosil leapt to his death from his apartment building in downtown Los Angeles last Friday, there has been much media speculation that the young man was gay.

Blosil's friends told police that he was clean and sober at the time of his death, but he had attempted suicide at least once before. Blosil left a note explaining he intended to end his life after a lengthy battle with severe depression that left him, he said, feeling as if he had no friends and could never fit in.

Blosil’s funeral is scheduled for Monday, March 8.

I feel bad for those who end their lives, but it must be understood that it was their choice. Everybody has problems and everybody must choose how to deal with those problems. Homosexuals are by no means the only ones on earth to deal with difficulties, insecurities, or even feelings of loneliness. If homosexual members feel that they are alone in being asked to suppress urges, then think again. We all have crosses to bear. Some church members deal with pornography addiction. Some church members deal with alcohol addictions. Everybody deals with temptations. The church does not ask anymore of its homosexual members then it does of any its other members. For example, there are many straight members who may never marry in this life due to a variety of reasons. They must live a celibate life for as long as they are single. Members do need to be supportive and kind to all, but to ask a church to change its doctrinal stand that is clearly spelled out in the Bible, just to make Rosanne Barr happy, is not going to happen. I rather offend Rosanne then offend God.

Agree with Patrick, what good has ever come from religion? Religion is a placebo for reality, why not enjoy the real thing when it's free for everyone? We all live, we all will die, why spend what time we have living in fear and trying to conform to what other people tell you to be? Without religion, there would be less war, fewer families torn apart and the human race would be more advanced by now. We would treat eachother with respect instead of judging eachother. I believe that where there is hate, religion can be found.

The Osmond family, and Michael's friends, have come forward saying Michael was not gay. Consequently, Roseanne has retracted her blog statement and has issued a formal apology to the Osmond family. In Roseanne's retraction statement, she said she has no connections to the Osmond family, and that a few media sources alluding to Michael's homosexuality were the basis for her blog statement. I kind of assumed Roseanne had inside information about Marie's son. Roseanne does have Utah roots. Obviously, Roseanne was making statements based on heresay. That's a definite no-no. However, just because the Osmond family and friends deny Michael's homosexuality doesn't make it true. Maybe Roseanne received a call from a not too friendly Osmond attorney? One could almost predict, including Roseanne, that the Osmond family would deny Michael's homosexuality. And now that they have, Roseanne is now on her knees begging forgiveness. Roseanne didn't have the goods to back her statements up.

Good for Roseanne for saying that and Marie Osmond should step up to the plate and take responsibility. If losing her son for this reason doesn't snap her out of it then she should commit herself into a psych ward.

It is sad but time to watch Marie Osmond fall apart. She can go back to Vegas and continue her performances and dodge the bullet for a while but the statistics are pretty true. Marie Osmond will slowly have to live with the loss of a sibling and when it hits it hits hard. Look at Gloria Vanderbuilts life after the death of Anderson Coopers (gay?) twin brother. Good luck Marie God is who you answer to not me.

Why should fundamentalist/cultish churches take responsibility for our grief and depression when sexual orientation is "supposedly" a choice. Many fundamentalist/cultish churches mistakenly view sexual orientation as a choice. The solution is very simple. Of course, with the power of Jesus Christ and God. Gays and lesbians just enter a reparation therapy program and presto; you're no longer one of those perverted homosexuals. Praise Jesus! It only took Ted Haggard two weeks to be an official card-carrying heterosexual. God is love! Always!

In this discussion the focal points are: the Mormon Church and its homophobic oppression, Marie Osmond herself, and Roseanne's remarks. Not every woman, and not every Mormon woman, is capable of raising eight children. No! Regardless, the LDS church encourages Mormons to have large families. George and Olive Osmond, Marie's parents, had nine or ten children. Olive Osmond raised her children, including two deaf sons, but she was a stay-at-home mom. And in addition, she wasn't married multiple times. Marie had two unstable marriages. Furthermore, she was not a stay-at-home mom. Show business is a difficult business. It involves a lot of traveling and rehearsing. Sure, nannies can raise your children but that's problematic. As far as I'm concerned, Marie wasn't capable of raising eight children and haing a career. And expecially raising two gay children in an extremely homophobic enviornment. Let's hope the circumstances of Michael's death see the light of day. Kudos to Roseanne.

Just a note to the post from Lancaster PA. I also live here and am gay. This area is extremely provincial and has a very strong religious anti-gay mindset, similar to the Mormon faith. We do not know if he was gay or not, but if he was and the Mormon teachings that had been forced upon him led him to feel he would never fit in, then I must agree with Roseanne. What mother would continue to support an organized religion that was the cause of her child's suicide? Is belief in a religion more important than your child?!?! I will agree Roseanne should have waited a longer period of time, but understanding that religious pressure Marie Osmond's son must have felt, she can certainly speak for me.
