Walters Regrets Ricky Martin Question

RICKY MARTIN LEAD XFULL (TWITTER) | ADVOCATE.COM

Barbara Walters has one regret — asking singer Ricky Martin if he’s gay, she reveals in an interview with Toronto paper The Star. On Sunday the iconic interviewer will end 29 years of her famed Oscar-night specials, in which she sits down for incisive chats with popular celebrities, with interviews of nominees Sandra Bullock and Mo’Nique. With numerous interviews during her lengthy career, Walters has misgivings about only one question she asked.

"In 2000, I pushed Ricky Martin very hard to admit if he was gay or not, and the way he refused to do it made everyone decide that he was,” Walters tells The Star. “A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now I feel it was an inappropriate question."

Martin, a single father of twin boys, has never commented publicly on his sexuality.

RICKY MARTIN IS A POP ICON, A LEGEND IN LATIN AMERICA, AND STILL A BIG STAR ALMOST IN THE ENTIRE PLANET. What a stupidity of Barbara Walter, what a way to get attention? USA is just a country, not the world, and if Ricky is not that popular here, is simply because he has not released any ENGLISH ALBUMS. His MTV Unplugged released on 2006 sold almost 4 millions worldwide and won 3 LATIN GRAMMYS, he SOLD OUT THE BIGGEST ARENA in the USA in 2007 and over the world. STOP JUDGING AND CONDENING so much, coming out is very hard and is a personal decission, if you QUEENS wants to set a role for the new generations, you worked hard, become famous and you do it, BUT STOP WANTING THAT OTHERS DO IT FOR YOURSELF. IN Latin America is very hard when you are a HUGE SUPERSTAR LIKE RICKY, coming out. Ricky has been very honest with himseld that is the most important, he had 2 beautiful kids, must have a great partner, and does a lot of humanitarian work. MISS YOUR MUSIC RICKY.

of course the closet queens here will defend another like Miss Martin- but only on these pages. Homosexuality would still be illegal if it were left up to these cowards. Expose all of them! I know of one who picked up a guy in a gay bar who robbed and beat him yet was too afraid to press charges. So the basher if free to do it to any of us. Being in the closet hurts all of us.

Warren: if you think being gay is something to be ashamed of and want to lie about it, don't expect us to lie for you. Not coming out helps to attack those of us who are out there, it isolated us. Don't expect us to respect that when you can't respect yourself. If someone expects me to have sex with them, they better not go around pretending they aren't gay.

Ms. Walters co-anchor at ABC, the well respected journalist Harry Reasoner, referred to her as "a news whore." He was correct.

Walters feigns sincerity during interviews to catch her prey off guard, but you can see when she glares through conniving squinted eyes that she's just selfishly after her ratings, she couldn't care less about any ramifications on someone's personal life. On the other hand what an ego - like she's taking credit for singlehandedly "destroying (Ricky's) career". As far as I can Mr. Martin is a talented entertainer who has done well while maintaining personal integrity and class, unlike Ms. Walters. Would be interesting if Walters was bullied in an interview using her own methods.

I think a lot of people are missing the point of this article. Walters says she regrets asking him that question. Very few people have the courage to admit past mistakes and say "I was wrong". To me, that creates more respect for that person. Personally, I don't think the question was out of line. He is a public figure doing an interview about his personal life. Barbara Walters doesn't interview people to find out about upcoming projects. Her interviews have the purpose of getting to know the person more and find out who they really are. And it saddens me that Ricky Martin is so ashamed of who he is that he avoids the question. He should have never agreed to do an interview with Barbara Walters if that is the case.

I disagree with some of the comments in regards to keep your sexuality a secret. I believe the younger generation (mine) is all about coming out; reason being that it brings forth a space of awareness, opens up lines of communication, and fosters tolerance. I respect older people's choice to keep their sexuality a "secret" because it's their "personal choice," but that's a very limited way of being. If anything, it's not a "personal choice" of staying in the closet that keeps people from living authentic fully self-expressed lives, but fear. And no, I know many gay men who aren't flamboyant who do have the grit to live authentic lives without needing to fall into the heterosexual mindset of stereotypes. Alas, it is my generation that is doing everything in their power to transform this fear-based society of ours, but I can't say that for the older generation because they have been to easily constructed into false consciousness.

When people don't have to ask the question, they will be demonstrating that gays are equal. Until then, there are too many factors involved for this to be public business.

Excellent rebuttal, Warren, to Stan's out at all cost mentality. Being totally out is an individual's own choice. I am not a closet case, but I am out to the people in my life who really matter. Other than that, it is nobody's f#ck*ng business. Why do Gays judge each other so harshly, when we are so often judged by the straight community? Sometimes I'm very embarassed by flamboyant gays, but they can be who they want to be without my judgement. Dictating to them is not my job or place. I just respect their right to be who they want to be.

Barbara Walters has no class when it comes to asking questions. She had no right to ask Ricky about his sex life. He may be bisexual and that is certainly his business. No one dares to ask Barbara about her sexual affair with a married black politician. This old adulterous hag needs to hang it up - she is no longer relevant or interesting to watch. As for Ricky -hes still handome and has alot of fans left. Be whatver you want to be -labels are not needed.
