Sandra Bullock Gets Emotional, Gay Inclusive

SANDRA BULLOCK X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Sandra Bullock was named Best Actress in a Motion Picture for her work in The Blind Side at Sunday night's Academy Awards, and her acceptance speech walked the same line of humor and drama that won her the Oscar.

The actress predictably thanked her costars, producers, and husband, but then turned emotional when she dedicated the award to all of "the mothers who take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from."

She thanked one mother in particular — hers. Bullock thanked her mother, Helga, for forcing her to practice piano and for teaching her not to ride in cars with boys. But she also thanked her for teaching her that there is "no race, no color, no class system ... no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else."

Earlier in her speech, Bullock singled out each of her co-nominees, including Meryl Streep, who she said was "the best kisser." Bullock planted one on Streep when the two tied for Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards

Bullock holds the rare distinction of also being named Worst Actress of 2010. She took home the Razzie for her film All About Steve Saturday night.

Neil Patrick Harris kicked off the evening with a decidedly gay vibe, serenading the crowd with an old-school Hollywood opening number.

@Susan-I do not understand that comment. A lot of the stars are very passionate about their work, and take great pride in it. Some dedicate huge sums of money, and amounts of time to causes that are important to them. No different than any other career or profession, with the different people doing different things, holding their own beliefs, and things close to their hearts. No different than the company picnics, dinners, etc., I guess. I don't know, I think sometimes, yes, the actors and actresses are over hyped, but at the same time, I think they get a lot more criticism than most other people on earth.

I'm glad she won. She may not be the best actress in the world all the time, but at least she seems genuine. I'm not sure anyone has the right to decide who is good or bad at anything. We're all good at some things and not so good at others. And we're all, I think, doing the best we can. Susan Gabriel author of Seeking Sara Summers a novel about coming out later in life

I couldn't be more happy that Sandra thanked the one woman who taught her the most about being a mother. Moms don't get enough credit! Though I don't know Helga, I bet she is like many others just trying to help her child grow and not loose herself in the process. Take Miguel Santana's new book The Marién Revelation. It talks a lot about what a mother has to sacrifice to let her child be who is meant to be as it discusses what Mary had to do to let Jesus be himself (gay). If you haven't checked the book out you really should!

I'm very glad that Sandra Bullock won, I did enjoy her in The Blind Side and Ms Streep as Julia Child. How can you really pick something like Best Actress or Best Actor when each performance has it's own nuance? I think her speech showed her compassion and level headed-ness. I enjoyed Avatar but didn't think it was Oscar worthy except for the technical awards. Ms Bigelow did deserve the Oscar for the Hurt locker as did it as Best Picture because it was an exceptional film. I believe it is coming out or is out on DVD. please don't miss this exceptional film by a remarkable director.

Nice speech but she's the weakest best actress winner since maybe Julia Roberts or Gwyneth. Like Bullock neither of these wins had anything to do with the actual performance.

Love Sandra, but I had to turn the TV. Doogie was just too painful to watch. So much for trying to counter stereotypes.

I haven't seen "Blind Side" but I think Bullock or Sidibe should have won. I heard that Bullock was really good and I thought her tribute was endearing. And it is absurd to think that the decisions are "objective" all the time. But a woman directing a war film is not an easy accomplishment. As a former Marine in Iraq she deserves the Oscar for even attempting having to deal with a bunch of men. I didn't think Avatar was Oscar nomination worthy and wasn't really that good of a film. I was pretty satisfied with the decisions for the most part. If you want to talk about bad decisions I would have to say Brokeback Mountian's loss to "crash" and Dame Judy's loss to Helen Mirren. She totally should have won for Notes on a Scandal.
