When Guy Ritchie was asked by Jean Paul Gaultier what he was wearing under the kilt he wore when he married Madonna, the film director raised his skirt to show the fashion designer he had nothing on beneath it. Gaultier, whose friendship and working relationship with Madonna dates back to the late 1980s, recalls the incident in an interview with U.K.’s Times Online.

The French designer recalls being a guest to the wedding, which took place at a Scottish castle in 2000. When chatting the groom-to-be, Gaultier became curious to see if Ritchie was keeping with tradition in going bare beneath his MacIntosh tartan kilt. “I ask him, ‘It’s true?’ He say, ‘You see!’” he says, and mimed Ritchie pulling up his skirt for the Times reporter. Gaultier then suggests he approved of what he saw, adding, “Well, I understood Madonna! Haha!”
