Calif. Senator Ashburn Comes Out

ROY ASHBURN OFFICIAL CASUAL X390 | ADVOCATE.COM

The California state senator who was arrested for driving while intoxicated after a night at a gay bar announced Monday that he is gay.

Roy Ashburn, who has had a decidedly antigay voting record, made the announcement on KERN radio. Ashburn, a Republican from Bakersfield, said his votes were a reflection of his conservative district.

"I'm gay," he said. "Those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long."

Ashburn had voted against bills on such issues as the statewide Harvey Milk Day and gay marriage, and had even hosted an anti-gay marriage rally.

At the time of his arrest, Ashburn was driving a state-owned vehicle.

Thanks Jay, I agree with your post, too. When someone "comes out" only after he has been found out and he or she has a history of being anti-gay, that person deserves no warmth from us. What this turd is now doing is trying to use our hard work for gay liberation to benefit himself. If it were up to him, homosexuality would still be illegal. He knows that the hubba around his "coming out" will draw attention away from his arrest for drunken driving in a state car. So he needs to create this circus. In my opinion, this pig is the lowest. Nowhere did I read that he even said sorry for all the harm he has done campaigning against equal rights. It would not shock me that soon we will read he is an "ex gay". Pathetic.

Dear Roy Ashburn. All these years other brave and out gay people carried your water and paid the most tragic costs of integrity and activism, while you stayed in your closet selfishly and hatefully. Go die.

Now that his smokescreen has failed, he has decided to come out. There will be no party. We would all be better off if he dropped dead. The lives of all the gay people who committed suicide demand it.

He wants to deflect attention from his breaking the law, the way Jim McGreevey did by making an announcement about his sexuality after it became clear the closet door was already kicked in. He has done alot of harm to us- first by campaigning against Gay rights and now by allowing the enemies of equality to say "We are not bigots, even this homeosexual supports us". Instead of him benefiting from any acceptance OUR (not his) struggle has allowed for Gay people, this horror needs to be kicked away. If it were found that Hitler were Jewish or Gay, his crimes would be no less horrible and he should still be rejected. If I were the owner of the Gay bar he gets drunk in and picks up his tricks in, I would slam the door in his ugly face. Let him sit with George Bush and Fred Phelps, the ones he enpowered. I think any self respecting gay person pukes at the sight of him. Types like him, Haggard and Larry Craig are a cancer on the community.

Roland Dirk said it all. We need to reject this self-loathing liar and hypocrite as thoroughly as he rejected us. The man is no doubt a miserable psycho, but reserve your sympathy for someone who has enough self-knowledge and empathy for others to understand the errors of his ways. This man is only sorry that his lies and hypocrisy have been exposed.

Davya - The man is saying that he votes for his constituents' wants, even going so far as to acknowledge the wide variety of stances within that group...and then says that he will continue to vote this way. He's only apologizing and affording an explanation for the fact that he broke the law and not for his anti-GLBT votes. He was elected to lead, and he will only follow those who would rather see us bound and gagged in the closet. Roy Ashburn will not grow into a functioning member of our community. He is a shell of a gay man, refusing to acknowledge that he's hurt millions with his hypocrisy, and you're qualifying yourself as similar by supporting him. There are only so many cheeks to turn, Davya; how many are you willing to sacrifice for the lives of our GLBT youth who when looking for heroes find only Roy Ashburn and his hypocritical ilk ready, willing and able to throw us into the political ovens? Get over yourself Davya, and get a clue. It's time to fight, not yield.

Of course, the cowardly closet queens here have sympathy for this creep-they are in the same boat (which any self respecting gay person hopes sinks). He voted against gay rights and promoted anti-gay bigotry but now wants to cash in on OUR work. He needs to reap the same wind of intolerance against homosexuals he has sown. He was caught and violated the law by driving drunk in a state car. He is a liar and hypocrite who voted against our rights, our right to live as equal human beings. He needs to be firmly rejected by us, AND his anti-gay cronies in the Republican Party. Let him sit in the sewer he made for himself. Nowhere did I read that he even asked the gay community for forgiveness for his working against us.
