Monserrate Supporters Strike at Gays

Supporters of former New York state senator Hiram Monserrate are distributing an antigay flier in churches as part of their bid to help him regain his seat in next week’s special election in Queens.

According to the New York Daily News, the flier claims that Democratic rival José Peralta, a state assemblyman, is a tool of “mega-rich gay fanatics” who has the “support of the billionaire Gill Foundation” and “voted three times for the gay marriage bill.”

The flier refers to Fight Back New York, a political action committee supported by Tim Gill and others for the purpose of unseating antigay legislators. Monserrate is one of eight Democrats who voted against the marriage equality bill last year.

“The flyer says Peralta, who has the support of many gay leaders and groups, is the ‘leading spokesperson for the gay community's [sic] in N.Y.C.’ It says those groups ‘are dedicated to destroying our way of life and creating same sex marriage,” reports the Daily News.

Senate colleagues expelled Monserrate last month for his conviction of misdemeanor assault against his girlfriend. He has aligned himself with antigay church leaders in a bid to win back his seat next Tuesday.

If churches are allowing fliers to be passed out endorsing Monserrate, the gay community in NYC needs to go after their 501(c)(3) status. "Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes."

To Scott Rose: While what you're saying is important, THIS is not the venue for it. Is domestic violence among LBGT couples a problem? Yes, of course it is. However, this article is discussing an ex-senator who was convicted on a charge of violence against a woman who is running to regain his seat while his supporters are doing their best, through use of these antigay (homophobic?) fliers to minimize (if not completely ignore) that CRIME to get him back in office. One has to wonder if these fliers are trying to make the churchgoers choose between being homophobes or supporters of violence against women.

To The New York Civil Liberties Union: Your executive director Donna Lieberman spoke in support of NYCLU associate Norman Siegel's legal representation of one-time NYCLU member Hiram Monserrate. Monserrate now is campaigning to regain his seat on a platform openly hostile to the civil liberties of gay people. Monserrate for example has accepted the endorsement of Reverend Ricardo Reyes, who at a rally for Monserrate said "I have seen a whole generation of children sunk down by the gay community." That is a blatant scapegoating of the gay community. Because the NYCLU so recently aligned itself with its one-time member Monserrate, it must now either issue a condemnation of Monserrate's gay hate-mongering campaign or be seen as associated with it. I demand a prompt condemnation by the New York Civil Liberties Union of Monserrate's gay hate-mongering. A non-response will be understood as an endorsement of Monserrate's anti-gay hate mongering.

The irony is that he is running in a heavily populated gay district with heavily populated Latino constituents, many among then also gay - hence the anti-gay rhetoric. He seems to be trying to get the Latinos riled up against each other so let’s see how far he gets with this ploy.

Somebody very massively misinterpreted my prior comment. I advocate for victims of domestic violence and have a particular interest in gay victims of domestic violence, because the gay community is completely ignoring their plight. In all of NYC, there is not one safehouse for gay or lesbians victims seeking to escape their abusers. Very often, the abusers have money and the victims do not. This is one part of why the gay community ignores the issue; the victims so often are poor and therefore it is considered that they "don't really count." I am here commenting to shake up the conscience of the gay community, to draw attention to the plight of gay domestic violence victims and to say "For God's sake you people; do more to protect these innocent victims."
