Rep Holds Panel on Fostering for LGBT Parents

PETE STARK X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

U.S. representative Pete Stark of California's 13th congressional district will hold a panel discussion focused on the reintroduction of the Every Child Deserves a Family Act this Thursday. The legislation would open more homes to foster children by working to end discrimination against prospective foster and adoptive parents based on their marital status or sexual orientation.

Those sitting on the panel will range from foster children to adoptive parents who are said to have experienced discrimination. LGBT and foster care experts are also scheduled to attend, as well as an American Civil Liberties Union attorney.

Hopefully there will be Social Workers and child welfare workers there as well to testify how children languish in the system for years and ultimately return later in life with their own children who have similar problems. It would be nice to see the system not only reformed to make it easier for people to adopt children, but to match children to permanent homes that are positive for their future development. Too many times children seem to be rushed into any home just to give them a home. The problem is that many of those parents were either never meant to be parents or are a poor match to the child's needs. We need to spend more time and money to support families from the beginning so that adoption and foster care is less necessary. Also, parents need more support with substance abuse and mental health which appears to be the majority of child welfare cases. Much of the problem boils down to jobs, economic opportunity, and health care. Gay and Lesbian homes should also be an option.

Hopefully this is the beginning. However, unless the democrats maintain the majority this progress will remain the future.
