Weir Too Gay for Stars on Ice?

Is Johnny Weir too gay for Stars on Ice? According to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, an anonymous source close to the organization says sponsors of the ice skating tour have refused to allow Weir to participate because he is “not family friendly.”

Writes GLAAD:
“To say that Weir is “not family friendly” would be a clear jab at his perceived sexual orientation. Weir is extremely involved with his family. He is putting his younger brother through college, and supports the family financially because his father’s disability prohibits him from working. Weir’s dedication to his family can be clearly documented in the Sundance series, Be Good Johnny Weir, which follows him and his family and friends through his life and career as a championship skater.”

Weir was harshly criticized at the winter games in Vancouver for his flamboyant performance style, with two French-Canadian journalists saying he makes a mockery of figure skating and should be forced to take “a gender test.”

Dubbed America’s Premier Figure Skating Tour, Stars on Ice’s sponsors include Smuckers and IMG Entertainment. Tours like Stars on Ice have the potential to provide a significant source of income to figure skaters.

Johnny Weir takes my breath away when he performs. Most of the skaters on "Stars on Ice" do not even come CLOSE to the high caliber performances that Johnny Weir delivers over and over again. He has a gift and also the touch of perfectionism that makes his gift shine. I am NOT going to watch any more "Stars on Ice". They need to apologise publically (on their knees would be nice)to Johnny Weir. And Johnny: your response should be that you forgive them but will move on and have your OWN "fabulous" Ice Show. They will wish forever that they had not been bigots. I am not one of the people who has blinders on and think that just because it is the year 2010-"All is well" and that the bigots in America have been silenced by putting laws on the books. Bigots Flourish. We can SUE THEIR ASSES now and alot of us do just that. That would be another suggestion to Johnny as he puts together his Ice Show: get a lawyer and slowly but steadily SUE THEIR BIGOT ASSES!!! Get them where it hurts

Firstly, Stars on Ice is a commercial venture and as such has the right to invite whoever they think will sell the most tickets and the audience will most enjoy. Secondly , it is true that JW is " true to himslef " but by being so flagrantly dramatic he has to know ( since he is not a stupid person ) that he will alienate a certain segment of the population and he must therefore be prepared for the consequences of his actions. Thirdly , it isnt as if he has won anything of late - he was the #3 skater on the US Olympic Team , has only 1 World medal ( bronze ) and hasnt been national champion for approx. 4 years so it isnt as though SOI are snubbing a current skating super star. I actually like JW very much BUT I hate to see a sponsor who has long been loyal to skating ( Smuckers ) slammed when they have done nothing wrong .

Just read all the comments on this article. Why e-mail Stars On Ice? after reading that Scott Hamilton owns SOI? He is against the Gay skaters, according to what I read. Smuckers is not going to be replaced in our Pantry. Shame, always liked their product, but I might choke on them now that I know what they think about my friends and relatives.

They are so trying to use Johnny Weir as a target for their anti-anything they deem different than themselves. Everyone knows that equality will win and they can see the population in the U.S.A. standing up for the lives of Homosexuals, this is their last bid to be as nasty, disrespectful as they can be while there is still time. If Stars On Ice has a problem with a few anti-gay sponsors, then get rid them and find replacements. I'd be proud to have Johnny in my family any day of the week, not so the biggots!

Methinks "jimbo" doth protest too much. Not all of us are as self-loathing as he is. Johnny Weir is a remarkable skater. I don't know whether he is gay, but he certainly is not afraid to be himself. Jimbo needs to remember that if it were not for the bravery of drag queens, Stonewall would not have happened. His misogyny and internalized homophobia are embarrassing.

Obviously, someone should start an ice skating show to rival Scott Hamilton's company. Weir is so much better than Hamilton, I'd hate to see him associated with such a piece of crud.

He's cute, but... aren't we done with the SAME story? Go get interviews with the people who made those nasty comments to begin with.

I certainly agree with many of the comments on the posts here and think he should skate if he wants to. However, it is my guess that he is going to take his celebrity and talent in a differnet direction all together which in the end will be more profitable. While figure skating is not my cup of tea I must admit that he at least made it entertaining and interesting and in the end perhaps that fact that he is who he is and is comfortable with himslef is the greatest accomplishment of all.

I am so glad that the homophobia in figure skating is finally starting to be challenged. Johnny Weir is doing for figure skating, what Ellen did for daytime TV. The fact he hasn't come out officially, should tell you people how bad it really is. Elizabeth Hasslebeck (yeah that one) is hosting the skating show, "Thin Ice" with Kurt Browning this month. Needless to say, Johnny Weir is not invited either. I am glad GLAAD is starting to get involved.
