Hotel Owner Offers to Host Canceled Prom

SEAN CUMMINGS CONSTANCE MCMILLEN X390 (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

Sean Cummings, a New Orleans hotel owner, has offered to host the prom for Mississippi high school students after theirs was canceled after a lesbian student asked to wear a tux and take her girlfriend. Cummings has offered to take the high school seniors by bus to one of the hotel properties he owns in New Orleans.

The American Civil Liberties Union has demanded that school officials to change their policy against same-sex prom dates and also says the district violated Constance McMillen's free expression rights by not allowing her to wear a tux.

Cummings tells the The Clarion-Ledger, a Jackson, Miss., newspaper, that he's disappointed with the school board's decision and that high school should end on a "joyful" note.

Ron, I believe it is a common sense assumption to believe that gays and lesbians can attend this prom hosted by Mr. Cummings. Obviously he is doing it to give all the students a chance to attend their prom as well as express themselves freely. Raven I do agree however that putting something in writing doesnt hurt.

Write On, Raven!!! I agree ~ open the doors to all those who just want to celebrate their upcoming graduation with their peers. i wasn't aware that the Board even banned the tux.... sheesh ... even the Oscars allow ladies to wear them. i'm in a wheelchair ~ but i'd be glad to chaperone. And, i'd be glad to support Sean's restaurants, hotel ~ and bless his heart that he has no lines of discrimination in his generous heart! Janet.

I am ASSUMING that the hotel owner will have any and all types of couples attend their prom. I feel that it needs to be stated and IN WRITING. "All types of couples are welcome to attend their prom". Black/white, male/male, female/female, Older/younger, private school/public school. Put it in writing, damn it. One can never be sure until it is actually stated. Also everyone should go to this restaurant any chance they can get to it. And tell al your relatives and friends to do the same thing. Make this owner rich. He will be remembered long after the prom as: someone who cares.

And Mr. Cummings will or will not allow women to bring women as dates to his prom???? The article should say. Otherwise, it's business as usual.

Very cool of Sean cummings, I hope this sends a message to the Mississippi school board that they need to get with the times here. The school should treat each and every student with respect and dignity not shame. What a terrebile thing to do to their students.

Kudos for Sean Cummings, Constance McMillen, and ACLU. The problem here is the decision-makers at this Mississippi High School not the students; a majority of whom believe in fair-play. Most high school students accept their peers. They never experienced the ruthless discrimination that their parents’ generation did at home and in the classroom. The principal elements of fictitious beliefs based on holy scriptures and/or “natural” law—for example, “natural” slavery and its concomitant racism—are total-control over and the attribution of less than human status to innocent victims, which lead to total cruelty. It’s disappointing that so many adults still resort to pseudo-religious beliefs to exercise total-control thereby promoting injustice and intolerance. Nobody’s sexual orientation should be disparaged regardless of whether it is heterosexual or homosexual. It’s heartfelt and genuine for him or her, and our schools should respect this diversity and adopt all-inclusive fact-based policies so each and every student can participate in any and all activities including proms. The hateful, obscurantist policies of this school district not only violated Constance’s free expression rights, but also her fellow student’s free association rights. Hopefully most of the students and their parents will allow Mr. Cummings to host the prom. Whether person takes a she or a he to the prom is part of his or her core fundamental right of privacy just as who he or she marries is. Unfortunately, a slim, diminishing majority of the “has been” generation in our country still prefers to hatefully deny gay couples equal rights.

I hope the ACLU, Lambda Legal, and all other non-profit law firms concerned with civil rights and constitutional issues sue the shit out of this fucked up school district. What kind of shitheads send that kind of message to children - that they're not worthy of being in the same prom with str8s, and that if the authority figures don't get to exercise their prejudices, then they'll just cancel everything and everyone suffers. How childish. How irresponsible. And these are people who are supposed to be preparing our children for adult life in the real world? Sue the bastards. Make them pay. Where is the public outrage in the community? The school board members should all be removed for cause and prohibited from ever serving youth in any capacity again. This is the kind of harm that should be noted on a criminal record check or child abuse history clearance applications. This is clearly child abuse. Shame on the School Board!
