Virginia Gov. Opposes Gay Antidiscrimination Laws

Bob McDonnell X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Despite growing criticism after Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli told college and state university officials they lacked legal authority to enact sexual orientation nondiscrimination policies, Republican governor Bob McDonnell said that he did not support a law protecting LGBT state employees from workplace harassment.

Saying that he personally pledged to fight against antigay prejudice, McDonnell told reporters Friday that he "[believes] that takes care of it," WSLS 10 reports.

Virginia state senators had earlier endorsed a measure that would expand antidiscrimination laws to include sexual orientation, though the legislation failed to pass in the state assembly.

Cuccinnelli stood by his directive in a Sunday op-ed for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "A public university simply lacks the power to create a new specially protected class under Virginia law,'' he wrote.

I feel safer now that he said he "personally pledged to fight against anti-gay prejudice". Instead of having the force of an anti-discrimination law, gays can just have the governor scold anyone that discrimnates against them.

Let us not forget that Virginia was once at the forefront of legislative efforts to restrict the civil rights of African-Americans, and also to define "black" as anyone with ANY non-white ancestry, thus maximizing the disenfranchised population. It is a state with a proud history of championing the cause of bigotry and so why should now be any different?

Geeze people. I live in and love VA. There is ignorance everywhere and bigotry everywhere. I don't care for our new governor nor did I vote for him. But he did win, she we have to work with him and just call him out. You are not going to come to VA anymore because our governor has old fashioned ignorant ideals? NY voted to deny same sex marriage, are you going to go there? Florida had a Mayor that wanted to have robo toilets because he thought the dirty gays where having sex in them and let's not even get started on their governor. You going to Sally Kerns home state? Get a grip people, VA is a beautiful state and I am not going anywhere.

Well Gov. I'm glad that you think your word is so powerful! Thank the Lord we are saved by a man who openly opposes antidiscrimination laws towards homosexuals. Yet he believes the fact that he said that he would fight it is enough to stop it? Yes, so many people have only said that they would fight and we can obviously see how that has turned out. Make the dang laws...that is how you fight discrimination from a government stand point, right?

We need to stop being on the defensive and start being on the offensive with the politicans whose salaries and family benefits we pay with our tax dollars. Every politician has at least one skeleton in his/her closet. Let's investigate his and expose it at a press conference, then support a pro-equality candidate to replace him.

To say that "taking a personal stance will take care of it" is absurd. If we were in the 50's and if racial antidiscrimination laws were proposed in Virginia, he would use the same statement (and it would do nothing).

LETTER TO THE GOVERNORS OFFICE SENT BY MY DAD: Your out dated opinions concerning gays and anti-discrimination laws have forced our family to have it's annual VA Beach vacation elsewhere. We have more than one gay member in our family and you personally have insulted us beyond description. My cousin who is in the military has now started a campaign to change their platoons annual trip to Busch Gardens to a new location! Universal studios. Our family will do everything in our power to hurt the Virginia economy by boycott since that is all politicians care about. We have already sent letters Northrup Grumann urging them to choose MD. with it progressive values and laws. You are despised sir.

Here's an idea for a bumper sticker: a big heart pierced by a cross, with a droplet of blood sinking, and the logo: "Virginia is for bigots". With the Liberty(-to-hate-fags?) University there, I am not surprised this state continues to embrace Christofascism.

I worked in Virginia last year for a few weeks. That state is so damn crowed with traffic jams every fricking day, I bet they would prefer less folks moved there. Sad though, beautiful state with great history. Wonder what Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe would think about all of this? And that is just for starters.

Andrew Sullivan, GOProud and LCReps are WRONG! What part of equal treatment does everyone NOT understand!?!?!? If Andrew Sullivan's boyfriend was in the hospital in VA with an illness from ARC.....the hospital could deny Mr. Sullivan visitation if an orderly or nurse got a religious bug up their ass....and it would be completely legal...let's see how fucking "boutique" he'd feel then......moron!
