New York Fights Back, Unseats Monserrate

One down, seven to go! — that’s the mantra today for Fight Back New York, a political action committee focused solely on unseating state senators who voted against a same-sex marriage bill last year, including the eight Democrats who failed to back marriage equality.

One of those Democratic senators, Hiram Monserrate, suffered a stinging defeat Tuesday in a special election, losing to pro-marriage Democratic assemblymember José Peralta 66% to 27%.

“First Target: Hiram Monserrate,” declared the Fight Back New York website prior to the race. Mission accomplished, no apologies.

“We’re at the point here in New York where patience is no longer a virtue. We’re not asking anymore,” said Valerie Berlin of Berlin Rosen Public Affairs, the political consulting firm that was hired to orchestrate the campaign against Democratic senator Hiram Monserrate.

The blowout was validation for a bolder, take-no-prisoners approach launched by wealthy LGBT equality activists who watched years of lobbying for a New York marriage bill go up in flames last summer when it was defeated 38-24 in the state senate. Progressive donors had also lavished hundreds of thousands of dollars on 2008 senate races in order to flip the chamber to Democratic control.

Tim Gill, a Colorado millionaire, is the PAC’s largest individual donor at $30,000. But according to filings, contributions to the committee range anywhere from $10 and $50 to $2,500 and $5,000. Berlin said the PAC claims nearly 450 donors with a little more than 50% of them residing outside New York.

The strategy marks a break from the past for Gill and his 501 (c)(4), Gill Action Fund, which has typically tried to maintain a relatively low profile as they worked to elect what they call “fair-minded majorities” in states around the country.

Berlin promised that Fight Back New York would apply the bolder Monserrate model to upcoming senate races across the state — pinpointing the unique Achilles heel of every anti-equality senator and exploiting it to their detriment.

“This was an opportunity for us to show the senators that there are going to be consequences for being on the wrong side of history and that we are going to put our money where our mouth is,” she said.

Are you kidding me? This is rediculous. Fight Back NY while I support them fully, had little to do with Monserrate's expulsion. It had everything to do with the misdemeanor against him for abusing his girlfriend. While I enjoy reading The Advocate this should not be your sole source of political news. I had meetings all day with state legislators in Albany the other day, albeit discussing an unrelated issue, I know what I am talking about. Fight Back NY still has a lot to prove.

Seems to me that the so called "Reverand" Rubin Diaz and Hiram Monserrate should be sharing the same prison cell together, don't they have cheaper rates if a cell is shared. And too, think of the possibilities, the two could become perfect bed partners!

John in SF and Hawaii Bill: And how much money did you give? If you gave as little as I suspect you did, you are the ones who are ridiculous, not me. My point is that the group seems unprofessional. I even wondered whether they were legitimate. When I give money to any organization, I expect an acknowledgment. That is NOT unreasonable. I am glad that they do seem to be on the up-and-up. On the other hand, if they are interested in building a grassroots organization, they need to get their act together. There are a lot of people like me who are eager to give money and time to advance gay rights, but have become suspicious of HRC (which I do contribute to, but at a lesser rate these days) and Equality California. But we need to be reassured that the grassroots groups that we want to support are not ripping us off. In any case, calling people ridiculous doesn't advance our cause or encourage people to support organizations. Your backbiting reminds me why our progress has been so slow.

Jay- This defeat IS your thank you. If you want something else, then donate to Miss Manners. WHile I am sure that Judith would love the money, I am not really sure how she is going to advance rights. You really sound ridiculous

@Jay: REALLY? A thank you note is what makes the difference for you between effective action or not? Oh geez...yes, a note would be "nice", but I'd really rather they spend their time working for the defeat of these people than worrying about etiquette.

Miss cynthia Nixon said it best when she said.. "We tried the carrot, and now it's time for the stick." Take note HRC..grow a pair and learn how to actually DO SOMETHING for the gay community. as of late, the entire HRC organization, is a ploy to earn Joe Solmonese millions of personal dollars, and tickets to fancy dinner parties. HRC is as bad for gay rights as Maggie Gallagher and NOM FIGHT BACK!

I am glad that Monserrat has been defeated. I hope that his replacement is gay-friendly. My only complaint of Fight Back, New York is that I contributed money to them via their website and did not receive an e-mail thanking me. That seems unprofessional to me and makes me disinclined to make future contributions.
