New York City detectives are investigating the killing of a transgender woman whose body was found Tuesday inside an apartment in Queens.

According to The New York Times, the 29-year-old victim, Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar, died of strangulation, and the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide. There were signs of struggle inside her apartment, and she was found naked except for a bra, but it was not immediately clear whether gender identity played a role in the murder.

“Originally, the police identified the victim, Edelbuerto Gonzalez-Andujar, as a man,” reported the Times. “They said officers from the 104th precinct responded to 69-30 62nd Street after a 911 call about a ‘male not breathing,’ and that the victim was found ‘unconscious and unresponsive’ and pronounced dead inside a first-floor apartment.

“But a day later, officials corrected the record, saying that the victim was a male-to-female transgender person who identified as a woman and had not yet undergone sex-change surgery. They said she went by the name Amanda.”

Gonzalez-Andujar was last seen early Saturday morning when she dropped off a friend in Brooklyn.

No arrests have been made, but according to the New York Daily News, police suspect Gonzalez-Andjura was killed late Saturday or early Sunday by a man she was dating.
