GLAAD President: Ricky Martin Can Bridge Gays and Latinos

RICKY MARTIN MAIN X390 (FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, toasts singer Ricky Martin, the latest major celebrity to come out, in a column for The Huffington Post.

Despite some who have been dismissive or cynical about Martin's announcement, Barrios said that for many fans, especially Latinos, this provides a more tangible meaning of what it means to be gay. Barrios also points out that the reverberations of Martin's coming-out will be significant at the ballot box.

"In California, Latinos were 20% of the vote on election day in 2008 — the day a majority of California voters took the right to marry away from gay and lesbian people," he wrote. "By 2012, Latinos will make up a hugely significant percentage of the voting public. For all the advocates looking to build support among those Latinos who voted for Proposition 8 in 2008, Ricky Martin puts a face on the gay community in a whole new way and will spark the types of conversations that build common ground."

RICKY MARTIN is the " IS THE MALE LATINO ARTIST MORE SUCESSFUL, RESPECTED, FAMOUS " and even ADMIRED" ( HE HAS DONE A LOT OF HUMANITATIAN WORK FOR YEARS). i THINK THE FACT OF HE COMING OUT, is already helping a lot, of how latinos view us, I grew up listening Ricky's music, for the Americans that may not know, he has a lot of beautiful ballads and love songs that take your breath away that have make him a POP ICON. His coming out going to help a lot WORLDWIDE, Ricky is a much bigger, famous, well known celebrities around the world than Adam Lambert, and the rest of the fgay celebrities that have come out recently. And his HUMANITARIAN WORK has gain him a lot of respect among BIG LEADERS like : HILLARY CLINTON ( that is friend with Ricky) , DALAI LAMA ( Ricky travels every year to India to meet with him), OBAMA, etc.

OMG Bobby, you are so ridiculous and IGNORANTE, Ricky Martin is Millionaire, and has been for so many years, when left Menudo at the age of 17 he already was rich, as a solo artist Ricky have sold over 70 millions of copies. His 1995 album a " A MEDIO VIVIR " sold OVER 7 MILLIONS OF COPIES, and the song " 1,2,3, MARIA became a global hit, from that on Ricky was doing WORLDWIDE TOURS selling arena in stadiums in : LATIN AMERICA, EUROPE, ASIA, AUSTRALIA,( even in the USA). Ricky had a HUGE SUCESSFUL CAREER before the CROSSOVER of the USA, and his career still the same IN LATIN AMERICA and many countries WORLDWIDE. STOP reducing the INCREDIBLE CAREER of a POP ICON BASED, just because you grew up in a trailer park and don't know what is happening in the rest of the world. I dont try to minimize the career of Elvis Presley just because his music was not relevant in Latin America, because I cared enough to educate myself for what he means for the Americans.

I hate white people. I think there should be a constitutional ammendment that defines marriage as a union between two people who are at least brown.

Keep it up, Bobby; you're just proving my point. Nowhere did I state that I hate white people, but you assume that just because I know what's going on in the GLBT power structure. Open your damn eyes...and enough with this bs "reverse racism" nonsense that you are spewing. You don't know the meaning of the word, and probably never will. It should be noted, too, that one of the reasons why those African countries are so backwards is because of the history of European colonialism and imperialism. So, you take a good look at yourself and your ancestry if you want the answer to why some places are the way they are. Of course, that would require the admittance of guilt on your part, and I know that's not a possibility, since you are so keen on denying reality. BTW, I just love the Obama reference. Keep digging that grave of yours, bitch.

Yes nobias, keep preaching hate against white people. Tell me, if you hate white people so much why don't you move to Uganda? Oh wait! In Uganda being gay is a crime and now they're trying to give gays the death penalty. So let's see? There's Zimbabwe, Egypt, Namibia, Kenya... Hmmm, all homophobic, all punish gays. Hmm, what a dilemma, now where would a racist like you feel comfortable? You could try to join the Nation of Islam, ooops, they hate gays. Perhaps you could ask Obama for support, oh wait, he's AGAINST same-sex marriage. Damn, seems to me like you're all alone. By the way, if Obama had played the race card the way you play it, he would have NEVER been elected president.

How many ways can we further split up the gay male community. Let's see...latest stats show gay men are 2% of the population (the 10% thing is bullshit, that includes gay men, gay women, bisexuals, etc); so we're gonna do what - separate out white gay men, out black gay men, out brown gay men, out native gay men, out asian gay men; what's that going to look like, maybe 8-9 in each group per city? Why do we insist on doing this? Is it because gay men of all stripes are still at the bottom of the social food chain, and unless we are attracted to each other we hate one another? Why do we have an event called 'Pride' when it's really 'wow, look at me! I've got money! I got my degree and I'm younger than you! Suck on it!'. The lack of any healthy adult social skills shows us why fewer and fewer gay men are even coming out anymore. Why should they when they can jerk off to pictures of str8 guys online and never deal with it in real life. After watching how gays act, can you blame 'em?

That's right, Bobby, let is all out. Every hateful drop of it: let it out. Let everyone see how you stick up for your fellow whites like Lambert and Madonna, and how you judge another person by your ridiculous, self-serving standards about what a gay person must value, when they should come out, and how they should conduct themselves. Your stance is pitiful. RM doesn't need your money, so keep it. He'll be just fine without it, and without your support. I don't know who you think you are, telling people how they should live in the spotlight and what they need to prioritize, but you have a lot of damn nerve. RM doesn't serve you; he never has, and he never will. Not every gay person, whether openly gay, closeted, or actively denying it, needs to be on a soapbox and proclaiming themselves the next face for gay liberation. What's good for you and those like you isn't for others, and until you understand that, you'll always be blind...and ignorant to boot. People have their own lives.

Leave Ricky alone? So you're saying I should forgive all the years he LIED about being gay? Gee, that's just great. Good old Ricky likes gays when he's broke and desperate for money, but when he was rich then the only place he had for gays was on their knees. Let me make it very simple, Ricky Martin is a user and I don't let users into my life. I'd rather give my money to Adam Lambert who came out without expecting a financial windfall and a job with GLAAD. Lambert unlike Ricky, never went to award shows with women or come out as straight. Lambert unlike Ricky, kissed a man on stage and celebrated gay male sexuality just like Madonna celebrates bisexuality. So the hell with Martin, I'd rather celebrate Perez Hilton who is out, is effeminate, and gets scorned in his own community than some hack singer that comes out to make a profit.

Oh my goodness! Reading these comments really reinforces my belief that gay people are just like straight people...just as ignorant, just as prejudiced, just as bigotted, just as intolerant, just as full of hate, just as unwilling to listen to anything but their own voice, just as quick to refute any argument with name calling...I could go on and on.
