Dreamgirls’ Condon to Take on Twilight?

ROBERT PATTINSON BILL CONDON X390 (CONDON: GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Director Bill Condon (pictured at right) is in negotiations to direct the final two installments of The Twilight Saga, Deadline’s Nikki Finke is reporting.

Condon, who directed Dreamgirls and won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Gods and Monsters, is reportedly Summit Entertainment’s first choice to direct the films. The gay director is among a string of A-list directors rumored to have been considered for the films, including Gus Van Zant and Sofia Coppola.

Condon would be the fourth director to tackle the Twilight franchise. Catherine Hardwicke directed the first installment and was replaced by Chris Weitz for the sequel, New Moon.

He opted out of the third film, which was directed by David Slade and is scheduled for release this summer.

The choice of Condon would prove interesting to gay fans of the franchise, some of whom have expressed frustration with book author Stephenie Meyer and her support of the Mormon Church, which helped fund the fight to pass Proposition 8, California’s same-sex marriage ban.

The final two installments of Twilight are expected to begin shooting later this year.

I just want someone to explain the thrill of this series. I was bored with the first and have yet to watch the second, not to mention I have had no desire to read the books. In fact, the only reason I want to see the second film is for Dakota Fanning, who is a phenomenal actress in my book

Condon turned down Eclipse for a reason... it is beneath him... just as the twilight books are beneath any reader with self-worth, self-esteem, and moral grounding. *Jacob Black: Oh Bella, you are the only person I will ever love. Don't be with Edward, be with me. *bella gets her stomach chewed open, and a baby ripped out of her evicersated uterus* *Jacob Black: oh Nessie, you hours old infant, we are soulmates, and I will be a good adult, and wait seven years for you to grow up until you are sexually mature, then we will be together forever!!! ... Yah, totally beneath condon.

Honestly, I think it's a missed opportunity not having David Cronenberg direct Breaking Dawn.

Mark, what does that have to do with anything? Gay characters have not, in fact, been totally excluded from media, and anybody with a little common sense will probably survive the last two Twilight films without the need for constant reassurance that other people like them do exist. What do you think this is, the 50s? As to a possible new director, as long as the final Twilight films stay as so-bad-theyre-hilarious as all the novels were, I'll be happy. :D

Oh goody, two more movies will all straight characters, leading more gay teens to commit suicide because they feel invisible.
