Anti-Constance Facebook Page Ruffles Feathers

Constance McMillen x390 (fair) | advocate.com

A Facebook page set up by Constance McMillen's Mississippi peers has drawn both detractors and supporters of the gay high school student, who was told she couldn't take her girlfriend to prom.

"Constance quit yer cryin," with a picture of a sobbing baby, had over 2,500 fans as of late Thursday. But notes on the wall of the Facebook page vary wildly. Messages include everything from "I SUPPORT CONSTANCE MCMILLEN!!!! COME SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!" to "dyke dykety dyke dyke dyke!"

Earlier this week, McMillen told The Advocate she was sent to a "fake prom" while the rest of her class partied at a secret location at an event organized by parents.

"They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them," McMillen said. "The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to."

Another martry being persecuted, like Jesus was nailed to a cross. How many more lgbt people will have to suffer everything from humiliation to murder before the date stops? Christians my ass. They learned nothing from Jesus' suffering and sacrifice. Nothing.

This webpage was setup by teens from the state that defines a 'virgin' as a girl that can outrun her brothers. I think the actual best thing to do is boycott, and speak out. Its obvious they don't care for money or attention from gay folk. THis means to me that we need to show them what kind of monetary clout that we have.

OK this group was taken over by her supported days ago Advocate. In fact at this point Facebook is deleting Constance's supported profiles for making death threats to anyone that says a word against Constance. They are also posting pictures from the prom and posted conversations between the people of Fulton which show what bigots they are. People's profiles are being deleted for this too but I really don't see why if threats aren't being made. Constance has released a statement requesting her supporters not harass anyone. The real question is why wasn't the person's profile who created this site deleted too and why didn't Facebook shut this and other anti Constance groups down right way?

Uh, have y'all even gone to the page? I'm actually a fan of it. Maybe when it was initially created it was hateful, but since then the LGBT community has totally taken over and the hateful messages are coming from us and are directed at the bigots. Leave it up to serve as a message and a warning to all those opposed to equality that their actions will not be ignored.

OK. As suggested, let's sit back and 'convey our stern disapproval'. While Constance bears the brunt of the hate, we do nothing and Constance suffers further emotional or even physical harm. When will we learn to shut the eff up before we become indirectly responsible for others' desperate acts because we insist on exercising our free speech? Our free speech can cost others their lives.

I haven't done the research but I was under the impression that since the cyberbullying cases hit the courts Facebook initiated a policy declaring they wouldn't allow hateful bullying pages to be created. Since it's not a public service but ultimately a private company first amendment doesn't apply just like how the Advocate retains the right to censor these comments so we aren't flooded with anti-gay comments. Again I'm not a lawyer nor have I done any research on it, but this is the impression I got. Growing up in a small town like that I hope she understands there's a nice large world and there are certainly a lot of people who *do* support her. She's a senior right? Maybe she'll find a great and accepting college and experience what it's like to be surrounded by people that wouldn't dream of doing something like this to anyone.

The page shouldn't be taken down. Even if the message is hateful, bigoted, mean spirited and all that is wrong with the world, it should stay up. The first amendment, sometimes is all we have left. Sometimes a message is so terrible, so nasty (as in this case) that we want to purge it from records. The toughest thing in the world is to uphold a right that now seems to be beating us at our own game. It should stay up, and we should, as we are doing now, convey our stern disapproval.
