Cyndi Launching LGBT Youth Shelter in Harlem

Pop icon Cyndi Lauper announced that her True Colors Foundation will establish a shelter for homeless LGBT youths in New York City's Harlem neighborhood.

The True Colors Residence is aiming to open in winter 2011 and will house young people ages 18-24, according to DNA Info. The 30-unit building will also include a communal space, library, and computer room.

“Kids are coming out in greater numbers as they see themselves accepted and represented on TV and in movies, but they’re still being kicked out of their homes or running away and living on the streets," Lauper said in a statement.

The space will be able to accommodate some of the estimated 3,000 to 8,000 LGBT youths who live on the streets or in shelters in New York.

The project is a collaboration between Lauper, her publicist Lisa Barbaris, and Colleen Jackson, executive director of the West End Intergenerational Residence, a similar shelter for young adults and young families.

My only real quibble with this is the use of "youth" being used to refer to young ADULTS. To my mind, an '"LGBT youth" would be someone from say 12/13 to 18, not 18 to 24. After all, there are thousands of homeless people in nearly every city and town across this country who are homeless because of the poor economy or mental illness or other societal conditions and these people aren't receiving any special consideration. But, it's equally well-understood that many REAL youths (as in 13-18) are homeless because they've been turned out by families and friends simply because of their sexual orientation and these kids don't get the type of real attention they need. I love Cyndi, but I hope there will be further announcements coming to deal with the problems facing LGBT teenagers.

Thank you Cyndi! We need more woman like her! She reminds me of the character Marién in The Marién Revelation by Miguel Santana who loves her son no matter what.

A great thing. Sad and pathetic however that the various "Christians", you know, people who "believe" in the loving and generous Jesus Christ, don't seem to agree with this "tactic of the homosexual agenda".

I hope this becomes a trend. As one of those who was given the boot for being queer I can tell you it is no picnic.
