GLAAD Call to Action for CNN “Ex-gay” Segment

GLAAD issued a “call to action” Wednesday to urge viewers to contact CNN over the cable news network’s segment that featured discredited “ex-gay” therapist Richard Cohen.

On Tuesday, CNN host Kyra Phillips conducted a segment in which she interviewed Cohen and posed the question, “Homosexuality: Is it a problem in need of a cure?” Also included in the piece was California assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, the sponsor of a bill to repeal an archaic law that encourages the state to look into the question of gay “cures.”

In its call to action, GLAAD said it was invited to explain its position on CNN Wednesday, but the segment was canceled.

“After extensive conversations with CNN producers and publicity representatives yesterday afternoon and following our blog and twitter action, CNN called GLAAD in the evening, telling us they had received numerous complaints about the segment and inviting us to appear on this morning’s broadcast with Kyra Phillips to discuss our concerns. GLAAD then scheduled a representative to go on CNN but received a phone call from the network at 7 A.M. today telling us they had decided to cancel the segment. They also issued this statement:

“By bringing this story to the fore, we engage various advocates from all sides. This story does not end here and CNN will continue to explore other views and positions.” —CNN

Just like the segment itself, CNN’s statement misses the mark and provides no explanation for its actions. GLAAD urges you to help us hold the network accountable.”

LUCAS I am not an exponent of conversion therapy. But studies of identical twins show that their sexuality is identical 50% of the time. These studies pretty much debunk the theory that homosexuality is genetic. Whether homosexuality is determined biologically and what role if any is played by the envionment is a different question.

this video irritates me for three reasons. 1) there is also scientific evidence that proves homosexuality as genetic too. so depending on your opinion, you will choose which evidence to believe. 2) homosexuality is no where near the same level as sexual predators; sexual predators prey on kids, for the power, its about sex, but the power they feel from controlling the child (boy or girl) is what gets them off, not the gender. homosexuals prey on their sex, around their age, for love, not power, not for an orgasm, but for a connection beyond the mind, through the heart. just like any other heterosexual relationship. 3)I FIRMLY believe that homosexuals do not need any laws to protect them... just give me equality... thats all i want.

But if you want to establish a successful business for money-making purposes, you also get the right producers and salesmen- and a politician and a quack doctor are not, by the way, good actors for this objective.

Dialogue? EVERYONE HERE SHOULD READ WHAT MR. BUSEE HAS WRITTEN, ASK HIM QUESTIONS, THE MAN KNOWS EXODUS AND EX GAY THERAPY BETTER THAN ANY OF YOU BEFORE YOU ASK FOR AN "OBJECTIVE" NEWS REPORT FROM THE CORPORATE MEDIA. Also, Ok. "Dialogue". Let's have a "dialogue" about whether Cocaine has been proven to be a harmful substance and invite an army general and a drug addict to argue. That's an awfully "productive" "dialogue". This lady organized this in a really stupid and disorganized fashion. Are we debating 1. about the law 2. whether homosexuality is equatable to pedofilia 3. whether homosexuality is a disease or 4. whether there is a cure for homosexuality? Well there isn't an answer in this particular debate. But if this CNN lackey had posed the last three of these questions and invited any liscensced or accredited psychologist (liberal or conservative) the answers would be "no""no"and"no". So I guess that would just be too easy on a slow news day for money-making purposes.

Richard Cohen cites a statement from the American College of Pediatricians denying the genetic basis of homosexuality. If you do a little research you'll find that this group is NOT a scientific, professional, or research organization, it is an ADVOCACY group, right-wing, anti-abortion and homophobic. They stand for abstinence only sexual education and are against the anti-HPV vaccine. Their statements aren't worth the toilet paper they wipe themselves with.

First of all this guy, Mr. Cohen, does not have a license in any state as a psychotherapist of any kind. As a matter of fact, he ws booted out of a psychological associating for taking financial advantage of clients.

From the volume of comments on the newsroom blog about this I would not be surprised if the topic was fleshed out into a special or a series. John Q. Public may not know the evil that is NARTH and it's siblings. It's a touchy subject that usually leaves everyone on all sides all pissed off. Yes, dialog is needed. How is it best approached?

This isn't surprising. Kyra Phillips is a right-winger. She's shown her bias in the past by coming down hard on Democrats in her interviews, veering into what most people would call a personal commentary.

The Medical Societies long ago estb. that homosexuality is born into humans, as well as heterosexuality is. The fact that a new bleep by Pediatiric Medical says it isn't genetic, but behavioral is ridiculous. Where is their proof? It is still being studied, and hormones by the mother is involved in someway. This hormonal genetic of some women in families could very well be carried on in generations. As far as the old law it should go, like a lot of other old laws on the books of states. The gentleman who has been sucessful in changing his behavior to align with a heterosexual, well good luck to him. I suppose I could go into therapy of some sort and change my heterosexual habits to homosexual habits, but that is all it would be, just habits, I would still be essentially a straight person, or heterosexual.
