CNN Responds to "Ex-gay" Segment Critics

CNN aired a segment Thursday that responded to the outcry over the network’s decision to host discredited “ex-gay” therapist Richard Cohen for a segment Tuesday about “curing” homosexuality. Host Kyra Phillips reported that she received “vicious e-mails” and “hateful messages” because of the segment.

On Tuesday, Phillips spoke with Cohen and Bonnie Lowenthal, a California assemblyman sponsoring a bill to repeal an archaic law that encourages the state to research gay “cures.” The segment asked the question, “Homosexuality: Is it a problem in need of a cure?”

GLAAD issued a “call to action” that faulted CNN over the decision to host Cohen with no mention of his being discredited, and to entertain the question of “curing” gay people.

On Thursday, CNN aired a follow-up with Clinton Anderson of the American Psychological Association. “Homosexuality is not a mental disorder or a disease,” he said.

Phillips also addressed the criticism she has received.

“And before we go to break I would like to take a moment to address many of you who e-mailed me about our Tuesday segment on this topic. Personally, I thought the absurd nature of the California law we discussed would speak for itself but unfortunately not everyone saw it that way.

“Richard Cohen was not the most appropriate guest to have on, but it is a decision that we made and the result of that is our continued discussion today. That is what journalism is all about and we will continue to do our best to discuss gay and lesbian issues in a fair way on this program.

“I wish that all of you knew my heart. And as a journalist with a long track record of covering gay and lesbian issues, I wish that those of you who sent me vicious e-mails watched my newscasts more often because if they did my guess is they would not have been so quick to send such hateful messages.

“They don’t know my record and my unswerving support for all communities in the battle for human rights, including gays, lesbians, and transgendered individuals. And to make it perfectly clear, I love debating issues, it evokes passion. But if we cannot treat each other in a civil manner, even when we disagree, then we will never move forward and have a world where all people are treated with the respect that they deserve.”

By the way, who ever thought that CNN was a reputable journalistic organization to begin with? Why do we even care about what a scum network with the lowest ratings do on their meager shows. Please grow up, there are better battles to fight.

Kyra Phillips has NO RIGHT to chide emails for being rude. CNN hired, and has legitimized Erick Erickson, a vile homophobe who called Supreme Court Justice David Souter a goat f@cking child molester, who also said he planned on threatening federal workers with a shotgun. If 'Gay Cure Kyra' wants to complain about rude commentary, she should urge CNN brass to get rid of Erickson, she should call HIM out. Until CNN fires Erickson, and quits courting the virulently anti gay right wing blogosphere, they should not expect to be spoken to in polite terms. CNN has effectively legitimized this kind of name calling. So be it.

having ssent a previous email myself in disapproval of the comments that Mr. Cohen made, I was upset to hear about the vicious emails that were sent to Ms. Phillips also. I only hope those emails only represent a small percentage of the total sent. We can disagree without being disagreeable.

As I said before, ANYONE who wrote Kyra Phillips (or CNN for that matter) hateful mail was doing so because they just wanted an excuse to act crazy. CNN, and Kyra Phillips, have a long history for supporting numerous LGBT causes & organizations and Kyra herself has made her views on gays & lesbians quite clear and it's a position that is nothing but supportive!!! I think Kyra is a great journalist & CNN (in most cases) does a great job of covering our issues - keeping in mind that they are not a gay & lesbian news organization.

"What? Did we do something wrong?" It's sad. The thing CNN wants most is to be just like Faux News, but they can't even master that. CNN's new motto - "we may be number four, but we pander harder".

They should have put this real scientist on the first segment, and then they wouldnt have had to do this second segment. She sounds a little angry. I dont advocate for hateful or viscious messages to her or anyone for any reason. Passionate messages that are expressing outrage about what was done on Tues by her and CNN i think are fine and are the reason they aired this second segment. I do appreciate them doing right by us and airing the truth this time. And she has a right ot speak out against any hate that was directed AT her. But she should not be acting like what she and CNN did on Tuesday was in any way right. She reported unprofessionally and untruthfully. They made a big journalistic error.

Kyra Phillips has a history of giving air-time to anti-gay themes, despite her ludicrous defense of "but I have a girlfriend who is of alternate lifestyle" (WTF?). She's almost a carbon copy of that previous CNN airhead who became Rush Limbaugh's girlfriend.

Quoting from the article: "But if we cannot treat each other in a civil manner, even when we disagree, then we will never move forward and have a world where all people are treated with the respect that they deserve." Treating people in a "civil manner, even when we disagree" has got to be one of the most foolish notions that we continue to espouse. Many things, ideas, agendas, etc are so abhorrent and beneath contempt that respect and civility are most assuredly not warranted. We need to stand up for ourselves and quit being a bunch of namby pamby apologists. If someone is trying to take away my civil rights, you can rest assured that I will not treat them with an iota of respect. Respect is not deserved. Respect is earned through actions, behavior and deeds. It's similar to those who scream about freedom of speech and how so many are so quick to pounce on those with whom it disagrees. Freedom of speech does not abrogate one from responsibility.
