Canceled "Gay Jesus" Play Moved to Fort Worth

A student production of the Terrence McNally play Corpus Christi, which features a gay Christ-like figure, will be performed in Fort Worth, Tex. after opposition canceled its scheduled performance at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, "The Rose Marine Theater on North Main Street has agreed to host Corpus Christi, said Adam Adolfo, executive director of Artes de la Rosa, which manages the theater. Although the theater is not endorsing the play's content, Adolfo said, it wants to provide a safe place for the performance."

The play will likely be performed at the end of May. It was scheduled for March 27 at the college, but a professor canceled the production over concerns for safety and security.

"We will give the play a 'safe space' but we would never, oh, never accept that MAYBE when it was written that Jesus came down in human form he was in, uh, HUMAN FORM- and could have some kind of, gee, idk, HUMAN characteristic.

Sorry, but the "Christians" who are offended by this play get no more sympathy from me than the Muslims who get offended by portrayals of Muhammed. (I also have to wonder how many of the "Christians" who claim to be offended by this play extended sympathy to the Muslims who objected to the cartoons showing Muhammad as a terrorist. For some reason, I think these "Christians" were among the most vocal supporters of the cartoonists' free expression.) Of course, these are largely the same ignorant "Christians" who denounced Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ" without ever seeing it (while revelling in Gibson's anti-Semitic torture-fest, "The Passion of the Christ").

Of course he was gay, it makes perfect sense. Also Mary was not a virgin, she got pregnant the same way every other mother does, she had sex. She was married to Joseph, why would anyone think she was a virgin? Jesus was not dead when he was taken off of the execution device, he was most likley suffering from heat stroke and blood loss. He was put into a cool area where he eventually awoke. If these exact same events took place today there would be no reason to believe that there was any magic going on. So was Jesus gay, I say yes he was. His best friend was a hooker (fag hag), they probably checked out guys together.

Without question, it would be insensitive and against common decency to deliberately provoke fundamentalist Christians with an insulting portrayal of Jesus. And it would be wrong. But if the play is not intended to be insulting, that is, if it is a respectful, but simply different interpretation of Jesus' life, i.e., that he was gay, then putting on the play should be tolerated in a free country. After all, there is nothing inherently wrong with being gay, and to ban an otherwise respectful portrayal of Jesus for the sole reason that he is gay, is to accept the validity of that homophobic anachronism. Therefore, if the only objection to the play is that Jesus is portrayed as gay, which SOME, definitely not all, Christians think it's sinful, then banning the play is not a matter of common decency, that's just censorship.

What? The play is now cancelled at a theatre in Fort Worth. What's going on? For Christ's sakes, then perform the stinking, shitty play smack dab in the Fort Worth Stockyards. What a perfect place with the piles of cow manure. This play does really stink to high heaven. Even an atheist such as myself can conclude that this play is pure rubbish. From an historical perspective little is known about Jesus, so it's impossible to speculate about his sexual orientation.

Art, INSULTING TO RELIGIOUS PEOPLE??? What about the countless things they say and do to the LGBT community that is insulting TO US?! Frankly, I don't care if it's insulting to them-if they don't like it, they don't have to attend the play.
