Gay Group Forced to Leave Church

A church support group for parents of gays and lesbians was asked to abandon its regular meeting place when church officials discovered the group scheduled a gay man to speak at an upcoming meeting about life with his partner.

Always Our Children met monthly at St. Pius X Parish in Billings, Mont., until they scheduled an engagement with sportswriter and author Bill Konigsberg. Konigsberg was scheduled to speak this week, but the church cancelled the engagement and evicted the group one week prior to the event, the Billings Gazette reported.

“We were told we could not have it there because of the mention of Chuck being Bill’s partner, and that it promoted and condoned same-sex marriage,” group spokeswoman Debbie Schenk said.

The group was notified of the cancellation in an e-mail, from Bishop Michael Warfel, the head of the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, and was a result of an article in the Billings Gazette, previewing the talk.

“I received a number of inquiries from Catholics who were confused about the presentation and who was sponsoring it,” Warfel said, noting public confusion regarding whether the diocese supported the event.

“And there was some question about a conflict with Catholic teaching on homosexuality,” Warfel said. “So I asked that it be moved to another site in order to eliminate confusion.”

The event was intended to be an open forum for people who wanted to know more about the group, in addition to those who have questions, concerns and fears about the LGBT lifestyle.

Hey, Todd. I truly hate Baptists too. Really hate Baptists. At least the Catholics have art and cathedrals. The Baptists just have ugly fucking buildings and Thomas Kincaid.

A fairy tale that spreads love???? Are you kidding me. Have you ever bothered to read about the "love" the catholic church has spread throughout history. The forced conversions, the decimation of indigenous people for "not accepting christ". and more recently the love that comes from being in bed with every depot and dictator in 20th century Central and South America? The catholic church was silent as the nazis marched millions off to their death and the hierarchy of Your beloved church have now been caught turning thier loving backs on the molestation of children. When you go into their churches and put money in their plates this is the legacy you are supporting. And spare me the whining about charitable works. Catholic Charities are subsidized by tax payers and not the church...just another business. Missionary work in poor nations are largely due to the catholic churches historical support of colonialism. Sorry if you find facts cynical.

I flip over to another story, and people are cheering at the news of people dying a horrible death in a plane crash. No one deserves that, even if they are homophobes. I can't stomach such venom, so what could possibly convince me to want to be more like that. I'll take a fairy tale that spreads love over cold-hearted cynicism any day.

@ Jeffrey Who or what do you honestly think I'm defending? You think because I'm a Catholic, I condone child molestation!? You think because I'm a Catholic, I support what this church in Montana did!? This is what I mean by painting with a broad brush, and this is exactly what I don't like about these stories. People aren't reading about the support of Catholic families for their LGBT children, while others disown them or shove them off to pray-out-the-gay camp. People aren't reading about Catholic support for same-sex rights - including the fact that most of the states and countries where same-sex marriage has been legalized are majority Catholic. The same is true of constituencies worldwide who have elected LGBT politicians. You're not reading about the parishioners who've had to build criminal cases of child sexual abuse against their own priests. They were anguished, but they were good Catholics to do it. The stories are designed to make you hate, to make bigots out of you.

Sadly this sort of hypocracy from the Catholic Church doesn't surprise me. But I actually welcome it. The more actions like this & the more the church alienates itself from average, normal ,caring feeling people & the more it becomes exposed as the antiquated, hate filled institution with little releance to the life of modern church-goers that it really is. By myself and my partner of over 20 years were raised in the Catholic Education system (Sisters of Mercy & then Christian Brothers) and my memories are ones of fear, nastiness and abuse, especially from vicious, spitefilled nuns. I am no longer angry, just very very sad. I wait for the day, hopefully soon, when people appreciate what a cold , corrupt and un-christian institution organisation the Catholic Church is. Decisions and actions like this when the church is filled with un-bridled pedophiles whose behaviour & actions go un-challenged, only serve to hasten the day of reckoning for the church. Bring it on!

cont.d While our parish hated the fact that pedophiles are protected by the church, and then denied by those who have done it in the past, our Archbishop for example, and a Pope who denies his role in Hitler's Youth Brigade and other atrocities he has committed in his path to becoming the Pope. We are not the only church to have committed atrocities, The baptist church which has spawned the likes of Billy Graham, Jim Baker and Ted Williams. This is the same church that congregations donned white sheets after attending services and placed burning crosses on lawns, today it preached hate against gays. The Episcopalian church which as the church of England has spread hate and homophobia throughout Africa and India and the US. If we were all smart we would be overthrowing the yoke of religion whose leaders teach the Gospel of Hate and just remember the Ten Commandments which occur in every religious belief on Earth. If we did we would end war and perhaps feed the world.

What a very sad story. What would Jesus do? Not kick out the folks and friends of gays trying to learn and cope with loving a gay kid. Yet another reason why so many of us have left the chruch and think that religions SUCK in general.

I am a Catholic and I probably represent 75% of my fellow parishioners, our Priest's refuse to preach the doctrine of hate that comes from Rome, they understand about gay marriage when they are denied any marriage, str8 or gay. A Bishop and Archbishop has tried to deny our priests the pulpit and found that our congregation will not stand for their interventions. The Bishop tried to give a sermon and had two parishioners attend their sermon and I mean an attendance of two, so we could have a report of their message. Our parish is rich compared to others in the Diocese, and the money is spent on the parish and its needs, not the Diocese or Romes wishes. Our priests do their best to teach God's message, not the 2nd and 3rd hand recitals of Jesus, in fact we do not have a crucifix anywhere in or on our church, nor do we have any niches devoted to saints. When we make our obeisance to the lord the symbol is a burning bush, the only physical representation of God in the bible. cont.d

I happen to hate Catholics. That is my right. Call me an ignorant bigot if you like, but I just HATE Catholics. I can't help it. Maybe it's because my grandfather was in the KKK and they all hated Catholics too. Sometimes bigotry can be a positive thing.
