A lesbian couple who were exiled during the Argentine military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983 were able to marry in their home country on Friday.

Norma Castillo and Ramona Arevalo, both 67, were married by Judge Elena Liberatori, according to MercoPress. They are both behind a campaign, "Same Right, Same Names," by the LGBT Argentine Federation to bring about marriage equality.

Two gay male couples have married in Argentina since December, when the high court ruled in their favor to allow them to wed. Liberatori also performed the ceremony for Damian Bernath and Jorge Salazar in March.

Stan James: Catholic church is not the worst thing in the Westerm world. I mean, I'm catholic, straight and have gay friends. In fact, here I am commenting 'The Advocate'. You see, the things that some old priests say in Europe are not representative of all catholics (1 billon catholics). I went to a Catholic School 13 years and yes, being gay wasn't 'good' but we had at least two open gay classmates and no1 discriminated them (teachers, priests, etc... kids are mean everywhere), you know why? 'Cause one of the first things they teach you in catholic school is to respect everybody, no1 is perfect and we all sin at some point, even Jesus. So we are not as narrow minded as you might think. I'm happy that finally in my country gay people can get marry and have the same rights as we do.

Tis is how things change. MExico city has gay marriage including adoption rights. Mexico's Cohil state has civil unions. Columbia has gay marriage via common law. Uraquay has civil unions. Argentina has limited rights eg pensions all over, and some additional rights in different states. Same with Brazil The RATZIPope is getting a rude awaking . HOpefully his church of Pederasty and homophobis will ultimately be seen as the worst monstrosity of the western world. BTW -t looks like gay MARRIAGE (adoption is still an issue) will be legal in Portugal shortly before the RATZInger's visit there. the fucking catholic church is headed for the hell it deserves. And will be renamed the church of world Pederasty on its gravestone.

The situation in Argentina in relation to marriage equality is all over the place. Firstly a judge in Buenos Aires ruled that the to deny a gay coupkle the right to marry was unconstitutional. The Government of Buenos Aires didn't make an appeal. Another judge gave an order to stop the wedding and it was revealed that the Supreme Court would make a ruling on this case. This particular case isn't the only marriage equality case before the Supreme Court. The couple were denied a marriage license in Buenos Aire but later married in Tierra del Fuego as its governor issued a decree allowing the wedding. A judge in Buenos Aires ruled in another case that a gay coupleshould be allowed to marry using the reasonong that marriage equality would be allowed in the future. The couple got married but another then ruled that the marriage wasn't legal. Now this couple is the latest. The Congress of Argentina has a law before it which would allow marriage equality.

I am very proud of the new weddings we are having in Argentina, but specially of this one. The couple are real activist in Argentina (this is our first lesbian wedding after all!) and they run a shelter for gay/lesbian and transgender people. Some months ago, an interview was published in one of Buenos Aires main newspaper (link bellow, sorry it is in spanish!) http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/suplementos/soy/1-1191-2010-01-22.html Wanted to share the news.
