Italy’s Highest Court Rejects Gay Marriage

The Constitutional Court of Italy x390 (adrain pingstone wiki) | ADVOCATE.COM

The highest court in Italy rejected appeals Wednesday from three same-sex couples seeking the right to marry.

According to Bloomberg.com, “The Constitutional Court judged the requests related to gay unions ‘not admissible’ and ‘unfounded,’ according to an e- mailed statement today. Courts in the northern cities of Trento and Venice had asked the court in Rome to rule on the matter.”

The reason for the decision, not yet published, will be forthcoming, Bloomberg.com reports. Italy remains one of the few Western European countries without laws that recognize same-sex couples.

Hopefully the catholic church is reaching the tipping point under RATZI the NAZI. Where the people of much of the world will either laugh at it, or puke when it is mentioned. Until there is a revolution there, the church will more and more be seen as a bastion of hatred, absolutist control (facism was an Italian, not a german creation), and anything but a place of Godliness. Its going to take time, but ultimately the church will be disgraced even in Italy. Of course the RATZI pope had to have been involved.

I also have a feeling the Vatican got involved. After all they didn't say it was unconstitutional.... they just didn't judge/hold a trial. I'm not a lawyer in Italy, but I'll wait to see what the results are. Also, no one is paranoid the Vatican has been fighting Gay rights in Italy every step of the way with every muscle it can flex in its government. I was appalled some British people wanted to arrest the pope.... well now I'm just going to be mum.

Hey guys, the country that made Monica Bellucci can't be all bad. :) I lived in Italy for an extended period of time. The Italian people, or the ones I knew well anyway, were some of the most thoughtful and stalwart I've ever met on this issue. Some had been active with L'associazione lesbica e gay italiana (Arcigay), which has more than 180,700 members as of 2009. (Actually, it would be really cool if the Advocate could do a story on this organization and how it was founded.) They consider full LGBT rights to be part of an earnest Catholic faith, which from the founding of the modern Italian state, is not necessarily held to be synonymous with the Papacy. Consider, this is a country with an ENDA and no DADT, which you can't even say for the United States. They haven't had sodomy laws since 1887. In light of recent antigay violence in Rome, their manifestations have been growing exponentially. It's not a matter of if, but when.

Between the pope and their right-wing, womanizing prime minister I wouldn't expect Italy to be the most friendly environment for LGBT rights.
