Duke College Republican Chairman Impeached for Being Gay?

ustin Robinette X390 (JUSTIN THOMAS VIA FACEBOOK) | ADVOCATE.COM

Justin Robinette, a junior at Duke University, claims that he was impeached as chairman of the College Republicans last week because he is gay.

According to The Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the official impeachment article and executive board members attribute the ouster to “conduct unbecoming of a person in a position of leadership,” including failing to attend events and using the group’s funds for personal use.

However, Robinette, while not denying what he calls “petty” charges, said they occurred before his unanimous reelection on March 16, less than one month before his abrupt impeachment last Wednesday.

“I walked into a contrived meeting at 9 P.M.,” Robinette told The Daily Tar Heel. “Sneaky amendments were passed, my comments were cut short and motions were made to move the impeachment forward.”

Cliff Satell, a former vice-chairman of the College Republicans and president of the Duke Conservative Union, said he was “appalled” at the way impeachment proceedings were handled without debate. While a few executive board members previously knew Robinette was gay, Satell believes the impeachment was prompted after many more learned about it earlier this month.

@Tim - Your experience is antiquated. Your education in one of Duke's professional schools almost 30 years ago has nothing to do with its undergraduate education today. Remember, it's easy to give $0.02, but you only get a penny for your thoughts. For those wondering, the Duke Student Government Judiciary ruled in favor of the Duke Republicans after a 10 hour hearing and 22 witnesses. Hopefully this is the end to these ridiculous allegations.

As an openly gay man I would cut this guy some slack, he is young. My days at Duke (the Divinity School) just the mention of being gay could have meant some serious trouble. He may have been wrong about a few things, but trust me, being gay in a republician club on that campus would have had alot to do with why he was impeached. In the end, I hope it helps move the issue along and show that even in a place like Duke, homophobia is alive and well. M. Div 82

Not to be adding fuel to fires, but I don't think it's right to lump all of the people of any group (political, religious, etc.) into a negative category. Even if most of them carry a bad opinion, there are always a handful of people who may be dragged along the back and don't feel so strongly. Leaders are supposed to do just that, lead by example, but sometimes fail to do that, leading people in the wrong direction. You can't blame everyone for what a handful of idiots do and that is always important to remember. Don't get me wrong: the guy in this story was completely wronged. No one should be treated as he was and it shouldn't be allowed to happen but we shouldn't turn our attention to the wrong places. In the end, you can't just blame everybody because you can't get to the ones who are truly responsible.

So much for the youth of tomorrow having a better understanding. Sounds like the same old pathetic game all over again. And the denials, oh how perfectly and appropriately homophobic. Don't think so? Then you don't know what it means and you're also ignorant. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO NORTH CAROLINA AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHY. Such a beautiful place, forever ruined by such ugliness.

@Joe - Are you delusional? You wrote "What is more, I've yet to be part of a congregation that has actually preached any so called hatred or part of any conservative or GOP group that has done the same." You may not have been a part of a congregation that didn't practice hatred, however for you to infer that it doesn't happen is silly and insulting. How about Focus on the Family Ministries? Jerry Falwells Liberty church and college? Oral Roberts minisries and university? HOW ABOUT THE MORMAN CHURCH? The list is endless. As far as the GOP/conservatives, they are for amending the constitution to prevent marriage equality. The Eagle Forum? I would also ask you to listen to Pat Buchanon's speech at the Republican Convention - where he rails against gays. Further, DADT is being blocked at every turn by the vast majority of conservative Republicans. I am also from the South - Tennessee -I don't need a lecture on how welcoming the south is toward gays.

First I'm not sure why anyone is giving accreditation to the Advocate for running a fully honest story on its website - its whole content is similar to reading through the political section of MSNBC. I could literally introduce you to a whole world of gay, conservative, Christians living throughout the United States. I've lived in Missouri, in Arkansas, in Mississippi and in New Hampshire and every community that I move to there are the very out and very proud Christian Conservative Americans who also happen to be gay. What is more, I've yet to be part of a congregation that has actually preached any so called hatred or part of any conservative or GOP group that has done the same. Please, I urge you to stop colluding conservatives and the GOP into racist, homophobic groups. Until you have walked in your fellow man's moccasins, you should not attempt to explain where he stands in life. Try doing some independent research and listening to the students comments from campus.

Duke and Dukie, Your posts are excellent representations of why gays hate Republican ideology that strips them of human dignity and rights. Nazi may not be the best word to currently describe Republicans but it is DAMN close!

Hear, hear! Anyone who believes that Republicans were shocked by his coming out has obviously never interacted with Justin...whether it was officially known or not, his sexuality was one of the worst kept "secrets" on campus. The gays jumping to conclusions here are displaying exactly the same bigotry of which they're accusing the Republicans. I may be out and proud and a Democrat to boot on campus, but I'm willing to wait for the mud to settle before making judgments. As Duke said, it is up to internal investigations to verify the claims. What I do find interesting is that the story ended up in the school newspaper...word on the street is that Justin either a) went to the Chronicle and DTH himself or b) was approached by the Chronicle and DTH and asked for a statement after being told they'd run the story regardless. If the latter is true, both newspapers deserve to be roundly censured; it is not the place of the media to out a student, regardless of the notoriety of the story.
