Pope Promises Action Against Pedophiles

POPE BENEDICT 201004 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

For the first time since his letter to Irish Catholics last month, Pope Benedict XVI spoke out about the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic church at his weekly address in St. Peter’s Square, promising action without naming specifics.

Benedict talked about a meeting in he’d had over the weekend in Malta with eight men claiming they had been abused as children by priests in a church-run orphanage, the Associated Press reports.

''I shared with them their suffering, and emotionally prayed with them, assuring them of church action,'' Benedict said.

Following the meeting, the Vatican issued a statement saying the pope had promised the men the church would do everything in its power to bring justice to abusive priests and would implement ''effective measures'' to protect children.

He reiterated that promise at Wednesday’s address.

The Vatican has come under fire for its handling of the sex abuse scandal. Last week, the pope’s second in command, Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, linked the sex scandal among priests to homosexuality.

A Vatican spokesperson later attempted to distance the church from his comments.

This church is putrid to it's core. It is unsalvageable and needs to be abandoned and starved to death. If it has no better regard for it's children than this then it's time to deal with it like you would a common criminal. Plus, there are healthier ways to have a relationship with God now.

Yes, yes, "We'll deal with it". ugh. Most Catholics are sick of you, most people are sick of you, and you're bringing us back to medieval times. I am referring to the top cardinalshop. Truly and literally, for God's sake, make SOME REFORMS.

WTF? How can the vatican distance itself from what their no. 2 said last week? Was that supposed to just be his personal opinion or something? That shithead and his boss don't have personal opinions, or personal lives! It's not like they go home at 5pm after work or something. These crazy fuckers play that fantasy delusion game of theirs 24/7. Everybody knows that. So, what really must have happened is that what no. 2 said was a failed attempt by the church to deflect blame onto the homos, but when that blew-up in their faces, they tried to backpedal as fast as possible by suggesting that what no. 2 said was not really the church's position. ha! right away! hahaha what kind of fools do they take us for? hahahahahah! Cmon you guys, gimme a break! hahahahahaha! I'm fucking cracking-up! hahahahahahahahah!

Paul, celibacy is not the cause of pedophilia any more than sexual orientation is. That is why God gave us hands, or I suppose priests can't masturbate either... Plenty of child abusers and rapists are married and do have access to consentual sex, they need the thrill of taking power over the weak and defensless for some sick reason. I do believe that being a priest is a perfect environment for a pedophile to thrive in, they have access to lots of children, they are in a trusted position, and traditionally the catholic church would rather cover up the scandals rather than turn them over to authorities. So in my opinion it's the environment that draws in the pedophiles. The movie "happiness" has a good representation if a typical pedophile.

The first thing the Pope can do is to step aside and let the Cardinals vote in someone else. What a racket!

Why does anyone believe, or care about, anything the Pope says about anything? I am tired of these female-costumed old men telling us that they are sorry about something they have doing for CENTURIES. (does anyone having a functioning brain cell really think that priests having sex with children started fifty years ago?) The Pope crowned as the first Holy Roman Emperor had three wives (at the same time), at least three known mistresses, and fathered at least 27 known children. It was years later that the Church introduced celebitcy for the priests. Without wives, the strait priests had no one but children for their relief; (The gay priests had each other for fun - they did not have to prey on children).

The Pope is now promising to take action against child rape because he has no choice in the matter anymore, it is no doubt NOT because he understands it is the right thing to do. It reminds me of someone who cheats on their spouse for years and will not admit it until caught red-handed, then they are sorry not for what they did but sorry that they got caught. The Pope is the leader of the world's largest religion, it is sad and pathetic that after all the abused children at the hands of catholic clergy he cant take action until it comes to this. AN EYE FOR AN EYE, I say. Let these people know what it feels like to be raped and tortured, robbed of their chance to have a normal relationship and life and then threatened with HELL if they say anything about it. The church is supposed to be the moral Highground of mankind, so whats going on here??? The people must not even believe in GOD himself, if he did then he should know what awaits him for eternity. Its like organized child molesting

In order to give such abusers a taste of their own medicine (and spread the fun around), the Pope plans to subject abusive priests to the same sorts of acts that they committed against their victims. This discipline will of course be administered by other priests (who can submit their names for a lottery to win the job). This is only partly a joke when you consider that for centuries the Church basically ran the single biggest B&D operation (The Inquisition) in history. Indeed, maybe that's the problem. Modern priests don't get to have cheap thrill like stripping heretics naked, tying them up and whipping the way priests of earlier centuries could. They just don't have as many perks in their jobs these days...
