Westboro to Picket McMillen Graduation

The antigay Westboro Baptist Church has announced it will picket the graduation next month of Constance McMillen, the lesbian high school senior from Mississippi who fought to take her girlfriend to the prom this spring.

According toOn Top magazine, the Topeka, Kan.–based church led by Fred Phelps announced, “WBC will picket the graduation of Itawamba Agricultural High School to remind the parents, teachers and students of this nation that God said 'Thou shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind, it is abomination.’”

Westboro declared, “This generation has been raised to believe that they can live for the devil and still go to heaven, that God has no standards and the biggest lie of all — that God loves everyone.”

“The parents of Fulton, MS feign outrage that a filthy dyke wants to parade her 'girlfriend' around at their night of fornication called a prom. They had a duty to teach their children what the Lord requires of them. They shirked this duty,” said the church announcement.

The graduation takes place at Itawamba Community College on May 22.

McMillen, 18, sued the Itawamba County School District with help from the American Civil Liberties Union last month after the district decided to cancel the prom rather than allow her to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

U.S. district judge Glen H. Davidson ruled that the district had violated the student’s rights, but he refused to force the school to hold the event. Ultimately, area parents organized a separate prom behind McMillen’s back while she and a few other students were sent to another event.

It's wierd that Reverand Phelps spent the 80s defending civil rights, winning awards from the NAACP, and fighting for the separation of church and state. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Phelps He almost sounds like the "hysterical backwoods preachers, drooling with hate to a degree that looks both comical and deranged" that two gay men suggested in 1989 the media portray to make people sympathize with gays (After The Ball, pg. 189). Don't worry, Constance. You've got the company of every celebrity, including Ellen and Ricky Martin. Did you hear about his $20 million movie deal for coming out of the closet? You're likely the only one from that high school going to college. Sounds like, without the scholarship, nobody else can afford to. Unfortunately, that means their penniless children will probably cling to religion every bit as much, so we have to keep removing the gay kids from poor hick town to Hollywood's land of opportunity. I just can't understand why they're so jealous!

Hope she gives 'em hell. As for Westboro, I'm organizing a protest against them near their church in Topeka that's happening this coming Saturday, May 1st at 2pm. We'll be at Gage Park just a couple of blocks from them (about as close as the law allows), starting at the amphitheater there. Fred's estranged son Nate will be speaking, and we'll be accepting donations for charities who represent the groups the WBC focuses on (LGBT, military, Jewish communities). It's a free event and is for EVERYONE. Hope anyone nearby will make a picket sign and join us. I've asked Constance if she'd like to come, but she's busy nowadays :) More info at: http://www.themfm.com or call 785-783-4730

how sad they're gonna protest- hasn't the girl been outcasted and ridiculed enough? what's sad is most of the school that doesnt support mcmillen would probably support the westboro church. i think she just needs to stand strong because she's going to be more successful than these homophobes who won't even make it through college

All they accomplish is making religious people look like a bunch of psychos and drawing more media attention to the people they are protesting. I first saw them on the news at Mathew shepherds funeral and it literally made me sick to my stomach that people could be so cruel. Maybe they should travel to Australia and protest that gay dog that was discriminated against.

A few years ago this group of freaks showed up at the Tracy, CA high school to picket something or other, a gay-straight club maybe. But the point was that the kids, their parents, and the community and jeered and laughed at them. Still this was their umteenth visit to the San Francisco Bay Area. Umm, makes one think if they had an alternative motive.

I agree that Westboro does build support for the gay community, but we need a way to connect them to the real southern Baptist church and some of the more extreme independent anything but christian churches. I broke those maniacs at the mass gay wedding of 18 couples in DC a couple mos ago. I spit at them, grabbed my crotch, as did a bunch of others, and told them from what hole their god was hatched. And the chief bitch doubled over with mad hatred, shouted obscenities I've never heard. And then they ran to their car and drove off. And I point blank call for someone who doesn't have a family, and doesn't have long to live, to remove these maniacs from America. Or throw them into the lion cage. Lions many, Chrstians zero. A fitting punishment.

However...given the "parents" (i.e. fundamentalists with an attempt at familial semblance and a need to legitimize weakness by harassing children) want to protest homosexuality, WBC should show them how its done- given the experience they have in such a field. I would love to see the "open-minded" agreements between the two "civilized" "Christian" groups.

"thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind, it is an abomination". Actually, the New Testament only says mankind and the Old Testament calls male prostitution an abomination. But then again, Phelps, you're a 1'st class nincampoop so vastly misquoting a book you allege to hold true is relative to your greater cerebral dysfunction.
