Clergy Battle Both Sides of DADT

As 40 military chaplains have expressed their collective apprehension about lifting the ban on gays in the military, a group of religious leaders has also voiced support for gay and lesbian service members.

The Human Rights Campaign announced Wednesday the formation of a coalition of leaders from a range of faiths — including Christians, Jews, and Sikhs — who agree that the military must repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

“As military chaplains, we routinely work with service members whose faith traditions and belief systems are different from ours. The idea that repeal of DADT will infringe on our religious liberty is insulting to all the serving chaplains who professionally minister to and with people of diverse beliefs every day,” said Capt. John F. Gundlach, a retired U.S. Navy chaplain. “It is time to realize that bigotry — not one’s sexual orientation — is incompatible with military service. It’s time for gay Americans to be able to serve our country proudly and openly, with continued courage, honor, and commitment.”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday 41 retired chaplains relayed their concern that lifting the ban would force them to "obey men" rather than "obey God." Their letter, addressed to President Barack Obama and Defense secretary Robert Gates, was circulated by the Family Research Council and the Alliance Defense Fund.

"By raising homosexual behavior to the same protected class as innate, innocuous characteristics like race and gender, the armed forces will cast the sincerely held religious beliefs of many chaplains and service members as rank bigotry comparable to racism," the letter reads. "If chaplains are limited in teaching and counseling on their beliefs, then the men and women in uniform who share their faith and rely on their instruction will necessarily face a reduction in the free exercise of their faith.”

Chaplains must walk a fine line between their religious beliefs and their duty to help services members find ways to get their spiritual needs meet. I know of several wiccans how serve in the Army, they have nothing but respect for the chaplaincy BECAUSE the chaplains DO NOT force their religious beliefs on them. It is a disgrace on the chaplains in service to even suggest they couldn't do their jobs if DADT was repealed.

How idiotic a point of view from paid religious mouthpieces. Sexual orientation is innate and innocuous. One's religious faith, however, is purely a choice. Maybe the military should ban religious people from serving, since choosing and practicing Christianity is a choice and frequently leads a person to be intolerant, bigoted and just plain stupid.

The US has a long and despicable history of valuing religious bigotry over civil rights, Christian dogma justified crushing and drowning women as witches, denying women the right to property, education and independence, denying blacks person hood and the most basic rights. I could go on and on and so could all of you, I'm sure. Christianity is a poisoned well; too many drink from it and become infected. They worship Jesus, and persecute in his name. They fail to follow his teachings, and so they miss the point of their own religion. IMHO, they should be relentlessly reminded of how frequently faith has led to intolerance and misery.

The Family Reasearch Council, Traditional Values Association and the Westboro Baptist Church are becoming less relevant every day. Nobody cares! They should just stick to abusing their own families.

I was in Catholic seminary in New York, and I know that about half of U.S. military chaplains are Catholic priests. That is just the way it has always been. I wonder how many of these Catholic chaplains are just following their right-wing, goon bishops in their ongoing homophobic campaigns. For someone to be appointed as a Catholic bishop under the current pope, it is much better to be a right-wing goon and a member of Opus Dei, than to be a truly holy or spiritual person meeting the needs of your Catholic congregation. That is why the American Catholic Church is melting away faster than an arctic glacier. There is no leader more a homophobe than the current pope, even though he is gay himself with a German monseignor boyfriend. I believe it is best to take the comments of these military chaplains with a grain of salt. After all, if you want to become a bishop or get a better assignment, you need to show that you are toeing the right-wing goon line of the current pope.

Our troops 'obey men' NOW!!! It's called the chain of command, you IDIOTS!!! And if ever they decide to 'obey GOD' rather than their officers; I pity them at their court martial! This bunch is just another set of homophobes; trying to hide their bigotry behind the skirt of religious belief.

"By raising homosexual behavior to the same protected class as innate, innocuous characteristics like race and gender..." Well, it IS an innate, innocuous characteristic! Interesting that "flat earthers" continue to deny science and embrace irrational dogma.
