Trans Woman Weds Girlfriend in Texas

A trans woman who was born male and her longtime girlfriend were legally married Monday in San Antonio after previously being denied a marriage license in El Paso, prompting the county attorney to ask Texas's attorney general for clarification on the state's marriage laws.

Sabrina J. Hill, 60, was born male and is listed as male on her birth certificate, which allowed her to marry her girlfriend Therese "Tee" Bur. Texas identifies marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

"It's a weight lifted," Hill told the El Paso Times Tuesday in a telephone interview. "Now the federal government and state government recognize our love."

Hill was born Virgil Eugene Hill Jr. and at 28, after a medical exam found that Hill had ovaries, she had a sex change operation. She legally became Sabrina Hill in 1991.

The couple originally tried to get married when Hill attempted to get veteran medical benefits for Bur. The applied for a license in El Paso but were told by government employees "they didn't have the authority to deal with it."

The county attorney is asking the state attorney general for clarification on "how to apply the law."

"The information on this case contradicted each other," a spokesperson for the country attorney said.
