Chaz Bono, the transgender son of Cher and the late congressman Sonny Bono, legally changed his name and gender in Santa Monica, Calif.

Born Chastity Sun Bono in 1969, he petitioned to legally change his gender on legal documents and change his name to Chaz Salvatore on Thursday. He was represented by the Transgender Law Center in court.

"Chaz couldn't be happier," said Kristina Wertz of the Transgender Law Center. "This is an important step in his transition and will allow him to change a variety of his identity documents to who he truly is."

I have a friend in the same situation and the whole legal documents, birth certificate, name-thing and all that can really be tough on so many levels. After reading the article at first I thought he dropped Bono as well, but I guess not. Congratulations. One more step behind you. You know, this is Chaz's thing. He has all his people with him. There's no reason why Cher needs to be with him for this. Not seeing her in the photo doesn't mean she's not supportive of what Chaz wants.

"Chastity" always seemed the saddest name to stick a person with. Sonny and Cher apparently did not own a dictionary.
