Wale Explains Black Pride Cancellation

WALE RAPPER X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Washington, D.C.-born rapper Wale defends his decision to back out of performing at D.C. Black Pride by saying he didn’t know about the show, according to website DCist.com. After Metro Weekly and the Washington Blade reported that Wale canceled his headlining performance at the event scheduled for May 30 because he didn’t want to perform at a gay event, the rapper tweeted, "I didn't even know bout a show.. I have done 48 shows this year..and I haven't booked one personally." Wales continued that even though he had been told by his reps not to respond, he felt compelled to do so, because "anybody who knows me an familar w/ my music know that I work for PEOPLE..all ppl."

I'm sure most 30-something year old "blacks" DON'T remember how cruelly marginalized they were in the 60s because they were not alive during that era. :-|

I am so tired of blacks, who finally have clout, using it to slam gays. Have they forgotten how cruelly marginalized they were, even as recently as the 60's?

@Shane we don't have "white gay pride" for the same reason there is no "heterosexual pride" event. As part of an oppressed minority, gays have singled out a day to celebrate "gay pride". Black gays, having been oppresses on both sexual and racial levels have created "black gay pride". Your consternation is the same thought process straights use when they ask why we don't have "heterosexual pride" events. Because heterosexuals were never beaten down mentally and physically for being heterosexual. Just like white gays have not been beaten down because they are white, but because they are gay. Black gays have to deal with certain issues that white gays do not have to contend with. Gee, as a member of an oppressed minority, I wouldn't have though this would have to be spelled out for you. FYI, since you probably don't know, white people are welcome at Black Pride just like heteros are welcome at gay pride. P.S., I am a white dude.

I thought Black Pride was about being black, but apparently its Gay Black Pride? This doesnt seem right to me, we dont have White Pride for gays, or white colleges, or white history month, etc etc etc. Doesnt this seem wrong to anyone else?

I'm not black, nor am I into rap. I am a middle-aged gay guy in fly-over land. It seems reasonable that Wale may not do his own booking, and that if he was a big homophobe, he or his people would have not booked in the first place. I guessing a look into his lyrics would be a good indicator of where he stands. As to why have a separate "black" gay pride? Why not?? Rather than criticizing a separate pride, ask: WHY the need? What is lacking at the mixed events? Is it lack of participation by blacks in the organization process? Or is there subtle racism that is pushing them away? You can't force solidarity.. you can only invite by providing an inclusive environment.

Maybe if they would call if Black Gay Pride instead of just Black Pride people would not get so confused. And why would they want some performer who has nothing to do with their community to headline? Very odd.
