Gay Obama Heckler Arrested

Kip Williams, cofounder of the gay rights group GetEqual, was arrested after heckling President Obama at a Barbara Boxer fund-raiser in San Francisco Tuesday night.

Williams was objecting to the White House’s plan for repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which doesn’t mandate an immediate end to the military’s antigay policy.

After looking to Boxer, the president responded, “If he wants to demonstrate, he should buy a ticket to a guy who doesn’t support his point of view and then you can yell as much as you want there.”

According to the blog Pam's House Blend, Williams told journalist Rex Wockner, "I was arrested, cited and released. Disturbing the peace. ... It was the first time I've done something like that by myself. ... I was close enough to see Obama's face. I worked so hard on his campaign and I still believe in him and I support him, and I wish I didn't have to have that exchange with him, and I saw the anger on his face when I started speaking. But I'm angry too, and I can't be silent."

See video of the incident and an interview with Williams at Towleroad.

Obama isn't GWB, and that's good, but I hold him to a much higher standard than Bush. Obama's just an asshole at this point though. Why should we protest against conservative homophobes? We didn't vote for them, Mr. Obama. We didn't campaign our asses off for them. We did that shit for you!!

I believe that the only reason this is actually an active topic right now is because people have been pushing this issue in whatever means possible. More people speaking up and being outraged at the length of time it has taken so far to have it considered and then seeing a timeline for "possible" implementation. Many times in the past we see people get into office and then shrug off the issues citing politics. I know people want us to be "mature" and "professional" when trying to negotiate our issues, but a lot of that has been done, battles have been won (like gay marriage in Maine) and it has all been reversed because some guy around town gets enough signatures to say we may not have freedom. I can't believe that after all of their training and combat, these guys are unable to deal with a gay guy. Or maybe its because we didn't say "please."

I wish the Advocate would be responsible and educate its readers on the history of DADT, DADT was the compromise and Clinton Inever signed it, he couldn't veto it so he didn't sign and it became law. Clinton wanted what you want now, to be able to openly serve, it was the commanders and the republicans who forced the compromise. In fact in the last 50 years the Clintons are the only two who have constantly supported gays. Now you are to du\mb to see that Obahma is going to sell you out the same as he has done with ENDA, DOMA and DP benefits for federal employees. DADT may have become law while Clinton was president but it doesn't have a presidential signature or seal. The person who mentioned the story of the gay person who heckled Clinton and his reaction pointed out the major difference between Obahma and Clinton, and his wife as first lady was always backing gay causes. Because of distorted history you discarded her wrongfully blaming her husband of something he didn't do.

@Christopher-San Francisco: Like you I admire GetEqual, or any group that will stand up for civil rights. What I don't understand is why they are not aiming their protests at politicians that are openly hostile to gay rights, both democrats and republicans. Where were these groups when Bush was president and actually supporting a constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage? Regardless if you do not like the way this repeal of DADT has gone down, you can't dispute the fact that it is getting done. Further, this president has done more for gay rights than all other presidents combined and Barbara Boxer has been one of our biggest supporters in the senate. By all means groups need to protest, however, I wish their anger and methods were directed at people blocking our efforts. Either way, I am sure the DNC, California Democratic Party, President Obama and Senator Boxer appreciate the monetary donation from GetEqual (they had to buy tickets for entrance).

@michael-Fresno: you wrote "I remember when President Clinton was confronted in the same manner by gay activist Luke Sissyfag. Security moved to arrest him, Clinton told them "No, he has a right to speak" heard him out then answered his concerns. Quite a difference from this president!" Need I remind you it is because of Bill Clinton that we are even having this discussion. He is the one that instituted DADT and Obama and congress are left to clean it up. Also, when GetEqual did this same thing a month or so ago, Obama asked them to come forward, they didn't, they simply yelled. Yes, quite a different president. This one is actually working on gay issues and getting things done.

continued- Ending DADT and the passage of ENDA will set examples and institute legal recognition that will have reverberating effects throughout the entire country. The margin of LOSS on domestic partner benefits at EXXON MOBLIE is no way to measure progress. Exxon Mobile could extend benefits to their employees pets if they want to and it would still not absolve them and their industry in their role in global environmental destruction and neo-colonialism. and you are wrong about what the actions of groups like Get Equal do. Even if some people find them over the top, they keep the debate going. Even if some people find them offensive, they demonstrate to the elites of this nation that WE are offended by their lack of action.

right on, Get Equal and Kip Williams!!!. good work. i think the fact that you got such a reaction is very telling, on so many levels. the president could have simply waited until you were taken away and reiterated his support for ending DADT -though his lack of action remains a glaring contradiction to such "support", but instead he went into a defensive posture and used humor and his privileged position of power to defend himself. the president embarrasses himself when he comes down so hard on protestors like you. its a vulgar display of his selfish lack of empathy for people suffering under the criminalizing policies of the United States. Read the comments on Towelrod where someone posted the entire video, so many others agree. -as for Andrew, Kip Williams is a member of a diverse LGBTQ community. We are not monolithic. We are not a demographic. We are real people who experience disproportionate suffering -even amongst each other.
