Allies to U.S.: Get Over Antigay Policy

AMERICAN TROOPS SOLDIERS ARMY MILITARY X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Openly gay officers from the Dutch, Swedish, and British armies have written an op-ed on Politico warning that more inclusive allied forces feel increasingly offended by the American military's “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

The op-ed was written by Maj. Peter Kees Hamstra of the Royal Dutch Army; Leif Ohlson, Principle Adm. Officer in the Swedish Armed Forces; and Lt. Com. Craig Jones, retired from the Royal Navy of Britain. They write:

“The U.S. armed forces are the world's most formidable, with an unrivaled might, and a readiness to accept worldwide deployments to engage in a range of military conflicts that no other nation views with the same sort of international responsibility.

“Yet it is also true that U.S. military power depends, in most cases, on an international coalition of partners. Members of Congress don't always seem to appreciate that America's allies are put off in serious ways by the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

“For example, units of our own or other armed forces have refused to deploy in some joint operations with U.S. forces, because gay service members would not work with the Americans — for fear of hostile reactions.

“In addition to protecting our men and women from enemy combatants, we must also protect them from anti-gay and anti-lesbian discrimination.

“Increasingly, this is not a situation we and our personnel will tolerate. So we are less able to help accomplish our collective missions.”

I don't have any more confidence in President Obama's war policy, than I do his predecessor Bush. Of the "3 allies noted Swedes, Dutch, and British, only the Brits have experience or track record. I wouldn't trust the others a bit. These "advisors' failed to mention both Iraq and President Obama's escelated war, Afghanistan ( our 1000th soldier was killed yesterday) don't look fondly at Gays and to be openly Gay now would probably fuel opposition and undermine diplomacy. I don't think these Swedes, Britts or Dutch understand that, or it's impact on foreign relations. Despite President Obama's great popularity, our days of having allies who would stick with us through thick and thin are long gone... and don't forget an Afghan war brought down the Soviet Union.

Would you please, for the love of all that's holy and for the common good, stop bashing Obama and also stop expecting him to fix EVERYTHING that's wrong with America? If you wanted to fix things like this, you should have really voted for Ralph Nader and/or for the Green Party-then you might have the problems you want solved. You all voted for this guy-put the frack up or shut the frack up. Change isn't going to come overnight.

Dear America, God is trying to tell you something, but you think you are the best country in the world. I am an American. I am ashamed of the way our troops are dismissed from the services because of "sexual orientation". I cannot join the military for heatlth concerns (diabetes), but I always wanted to serve our nation. I'm glad that I'm not able to serve now, because of the blatant ignorance of the United States. We are all born, and we all die. It's time you stood up for your GLBT communities that will take a bullet for their country. It's time to end this now. God bless our local GLBT service members, whom fight for freedom and still have to lie/hide their sexual orientation.

I am amazed that our country denounces other countries anti-gay policies and are so resistant to changing our own policies that discriminate. People from other countries certainly don't see us as the symbol of "freedom". The US is once again lagging behind rather than being the leaders that we claim to be for the international community.

What appears to have been lost on our political and military 'leaders'; is that this inane policy, known as DADT, has made us the laughing stock of the free world. One of these days we're going to do something, like invade Iran, and our allies are just going to tell us 'no' when he ask them to join the 'coalition'.

Our Allies do not joke around wig this! I was on one cruise, one of the seninor enlisted on my US Navy ship found out that one of our NATO sister ships had two sailors on board who were Transgendered. He was balantly verbally abusive to them every chance he could be. The day came when he had a heart attack. Our frigate did not have a doctor, so we Medivaced hin off to he closest ship with a real doctor. But, thier two corpsman were the yonug ladies he had disrespected so often before. So, they were redirected to he next ship, but... They knew about him. So they were redircted again... He lived an never returned to our ship. Do not screw around with NATO forces! They don't play games!

Since a great number of Americans think the rest of the world is made up of inferiors, I doubt this will make much of a ripple.

I wonder if this will be reported on any other news source other than The Advocate, since the Republicans own most of them.
