A History of Trans and Trans-Like Veterans

TRANS DOCUMENTARY X390

Pam’s House Blend’s Autumn Sandeen posted a documentary on “transgender and transgender-like veterans” in honor of Memorial Day. The video traces the history of trans service members from the Revolutionary War to the early 20th century.

Cool, I can't wait to see this when I get home. For those of you who don't know, there are a LOT of us trans veterans out there; seriously, of all the transfolk I have known in my life, I'd put it at around 1 in 4, though the number is going down with this new generation who grew up without the feeling they had to hide or aching like us oldsters ;). There's even a national organization for trans veterans: TAVA, the Transgender American Veterans Association. Look us up, we're on the net.

Im sorry but the term "transgender - like" to describe someone who happen to cross gender roles is wrong. If there is no further documentation that these people intended to live as the opposit sex for the rest of their lives, you are simply trying to use a persons actions to purpose transgenders inclusion into DADT. Yes, there have been many people that served as their birt sex only to transition after getting out but it is not the same thing as those that have crossed gender roles for other reasons than their needing pay to support their family or just patriotic duty.

Many M-F have served before coming out. I know at least two who survived Vietnam and have transitioned since then. I'm sure there have been hundreds, if not thousands, who have done so during the history of the USA. It is long past time for DADT to go away.

Thank you for the wonderful post. It is astounding and heartbreaking that bigotry and homophobia has tried to erase from history those LGBT individuals who have given so much. I only wish this article ( as well as the video on Pam's Houseblend) had been more widely circulated yesterday. It is a perfect reminder to those of us to never treat the transgendered as inferior or anything less than what we are. Courage, strength and dignity come in all forms of LGBT as it does in heterosexuals. Thank you once again.
