Al and Tipper Gore to Separate

Former vice president Al Gore and his wife, Tipper, have decided to separate after 40 years of marriage.

The Associated Press reported on the split Tuesday afternoon.

“According to an e-mail circulated among the couple's friends and obtained by the Associated Press on Tuesday, the Gores said it was ‘a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration,'” the AP reported.

Vice President Gore won an Oscar for his documentary on climate change, An Inconvenient Truth, after he lost the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush. He and Tipper have been strong advocates for LGBT rights, with Tipper actively campaigning against Proposition 8 in California and both expressing their support for marriage equality. The former vice president announced his support for marriage equality in a video posted by his Current TV in January 2008. Watch it below.

Tipper Gore is a longtime friend of furniture designers Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams and has been involved in their gay rights efforts. She is a member of the honorary council of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

I guess now Al Gore has been cleared of the sex pest allegations he will be emerging again to scare the children about rising sea levels and carbon footprints. Strange that he has bought yet another energy-guzzling mansion, this one on the ocean-front and travels around the world by private jet though. I agree with Melvin, we miss out on so much regarding communion with other humans because of social mores about exclusivity and marriage. Not that we should all be polygamous, but I think the more we are open to forming relationships with others we will have no problem doing it with refinement and respect. It just makes me sad to see people separate. I'n glad that at least they decided to separate instead of fuck around on each other. SOme separations can be really nasty, but from hearing from people staying in a miserable marriage or divorcing are extremely traumatic experiences.

I first read this story on Yahoo News - and I couldn't believe the hatred and animosity towards Al Gore. Do only right-wing nut jobs read Yahoo these days? It is sad when any relationship ends - and my best to both of them.

It is saddening that any relationship of such length dissolves. The human spirit is a mystery in that folks such as the Gores can display such affection, honestly, and yet even they experience difficulties. It makes me wonder if man is meant to be monontomus throughout entire lives. Perhaps we each are in lives for a purpose and then move on. Perhaps that is one of the lessons of life's experiences.

Al Gore has been a strong advocate" of LGBT rights? If I'm not mistaken, when he was running against Bush II, he stated that he believed marriage was b/t a man and a woman.

That's unfortunate. People should base their marriage on being happy sharing their life with each other and creating new things together, not because they have been together long. Maybe they just need time away from each other.
