Catholic College to Weigh Gay Marriage Course

Archbishop Myers (Diocese of Peoria) | Advocate.com

A committee at Seton Hall University in New Jersey will meet Thursday to weigh the fate of a course on same-sex marriage scheduled for the fall.

According to The Star-Ledger, “The Seton Hall Board of Regents asked one of its subcommittees, called the Mission and Identity Committee, to evaluate the course, said Thomas White, a Seton Hall spokesman. The committee’s dozen or so members will meet behind closed doors on the South Orange campus beginning today, though it is unclear how they will proceed or how long they will take to make their recommendation.”

Last month, Newark Archbishop John J. Myers (pictured) objected to the course as being in conflict with Catholic teaching. The political science department and the provost had approved the course as an objective examination of a public policy issue. Since the controversy erupted, the American Association of University Professors issued a statement in favor of the course and academic freedom.

The course will be taught by W. King Mott, an openly gay professor who has clashed with the university administration in the past. In 2005, he was demoted from an associate dean position after a newspaper published his letter challenging the church’s stance on homosexuality.

There are a few things that are questionable in this mission statement when comparing the actions of the administration versus what the university has set in stone. First and foremost, it is obvious that the university’s administration is against homosexuals. How is it that the university will have the ability to development of informed convictions, independent judgment, and lifelong commitments to learning-characteristic features of enlightened citizens if the students’ eyes are blinded to the prospective course that is to come about? The reality is that in the real world, there will be people who are non-catholic; especially in our country. In addition to that, there will also be homosexuals in the community.

Even the late pope JPII was not against critical thinking. He stated that catholic colleges should not present ideas counter to the church’s teaching as if they were actually the church’s teaching, but he didn’t say that multiple points of view should be repressed. That makes sense. The church should have the right to state its own dogma and people can accept it or reject it as they see fit. If Bishop Myers were confident in the moral, philosophical and logical underpinnings of his church’s teachings, he would WANT to expose the students to all points of view just to reinforce why the Catholic point of view is the “truthful” one. By creating an atmosphere of intellectual deprivation, Myers is indicating that he believes there is a chasm between “truth” and the church’s teachings and that Catholics must be protected from the truth, lest they lose their Catholic identity. He does disservice to both his church and education.

There are lots of good priests, and higher ups in the church. But their life's work is not worth a dime if they go agaisnt the tyranny of Rome, run by the churchFuhrer who unexcommunicated a holocaust denier, Bishop williamson, last year. and yes, the church is splitting on issues like gay marriage, at least at the parishoniers level. And the younger they are, the more apt the Catholics are to support gay marriage. But for the pope and those who covered up the rot which renames the church "MOlesters R US", they have a genetic problem that results in the calcification - hydration of their brain. Keep pushing, but the real win won't come until at least RATZInger goes to where he belongs, and it could be forever. So kep trying to get people to leave this so called church. If they are lucky enough to have avoided sexual abuse, they almost certainly have been mentally abused. BTW, calcium compounds and hydration is how cement hardens.

It's unfortunate that a forum for a better understanding of a life commitment would not be taken advantage of. But of course I would hope it would be given by the best people in the know, those from the LGBT community

So do you think Catholics are more likely to be anti-gay? A new study finds that is not necessarily true. The states with the highest proportion of Catholics are the states that are more likely to support LGBT rights. According to an article in Pink News, Six of the eight states where 50 per cent or more of the public supports gay marriage are the states with the highest proportion of Catholics, ranging from Rhode Island at 46 per cent to New York and California at 37 per cent. The institutional church (hierarchy)has always lagged far behind the the believing church (people). Catholic people in general have a keen sense of social justice which will in time, prevail. Hope that the course at Seton Hall gets into the curriculum.

It is not accurate to say that "Roman Catholics" oppose gay marriage. It is true that the HIERARCHY of the Catholic Church remains rabidly opposed and even scapegoats gay men to distract attention from its (now global) pedophile priest scandal. Surprisingly, however, the Catholic laity has shifted considerably over time, even in the last four years. A recent Gallup poll found that in May 2010 62% of Catholics agreed that same-sex relationships are "morally acceptable"--a dramatic change from the 46% who responded similarly in May 2006. http://www.gallup.com/poll/135764/Americans-Acceptance-Gay-Relations-Crosses-Threshold.aspx The real problem in the church lies in its uber-conservative upper hierarchy, with a College of Cardinals filled nearly entirely by Pope John Paul II appointments.

Please be clear, not all Catholics believe this way. Roman Catholics are against gay marriages.
