Evangelicals Push Exclusion of UAFA

Evangelical leaders on the far right held a press call Wednesday urging lawmakers on Capitol Hill to pass comprehensive immigration reform but exclude LGBT families from the legislation.

Groups such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference have joined Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of the conservative legal group Liberty Counsel, in vehemently opposing inclusion of the Uniting American Families Act, which would allow American citizens and green card holders to sponsor their foreign-born same-sex partners for residency.

"Same-sex domestic partnerships will doom any effort for bipartisan support of immigration and will cause religious conservatives to withdraw their support," Staver said in a statement issued last week.

But the calls have met with stiff resistance from the leaders of other religious denominations who support the inclusion of LGBT families in the reform package.

“Just as Jesus did not set any preconditions on identifying himself with, and loving, the sojourner, so too does he call all who claim to follow him to love and welcome the sojourner without moral preconditions,” said Bill Mefford, director of civil and human rights for the General Board of Church and Society with the United Methodist Church. “To demand the right to prophetically challenge the nation to incorporate hospitality into our immigration policy but then to work to exclude some people based on their sexual orientation is to lose the moral basis for making that prophetic challenge. We want immigration reform that is just and humane, and that is truly comprehensive and truly moral.”

Key legislators in both the House and Senate have signaled their support for UAFA inclusion, including Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, chief sponsor of the House immigration bill, and Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, who is spearheading the effort to write comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

Steve Ralls, spokesman for the pro-LGBT Immigration Equality, said the breadth of support that has developed for folding gay families into the bill puts conservatives at a disadvantage.

“The combination of all those things have led us to the point where our inclusion in the bill is expected among most faith and immigration groups and those that are preaching for our exclusion are really the ones who are fighting an uphill battle,” Ralls said.

Schumer said last week that he believed an immigration reform bill, which has yet to be introduced, could potentially be passed by the end of the year or at least by March of 2011.

Wasn’t the Pharisees of Christ’s day all about being conservative and protecting the faith from those who were on the outside of the faith? Wasn’t a Pharisee who asked Christ “who is your neighbor” so he could get out of loving people he didn’t like? Didn’t Christ say "Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?" Wasn’t that because the ‘Tradition of Man” had taken the place of, and nullified, the two commandments of Christ(God)? (1st Commandment: Love your God above everything else, 2nd Commandment: Love your neighbor as Christ has love you OR Love your neighbor as you love yourself). I would be wary of those the ‘Neo-conservative’ religious vipers who come in sheep clothing: who ‘fill up the measure of guilt’ and lay/bind those burdens/sorrows on man shoulders, blowing their own700 club horns, and clamming to do great works in their ‘god’ name but refuse to do any work, even with one little finger (cloth the naked, feed the hungry, visit those who are in prison), for anyone who they label as unworthy. For these wolves do their works for the eye of man, not the one they claim to serve. These wolves will do anything to keep you from knowing what grace is really about, and try to get you to believe you have to earn what was freely given in the good news. They will fight tooth and nail to keep you stupid and self hating and spin that dogma so you buy into it and love it. Truth: They will get what they deserve in the end. Doesn’t mean you have to blindly follow them. If you don’t understand what I said, this was not meant for you. If you say you don’t believe, again this was not for you. Problem is most people don’t take the time to know what was really said in these stories, so they get snowed by the bible thumpers. Those who say they hate religion: say they hate something they really don’t have a clue about: if what was said by person ‘X’ was the truth or not. A lot of us rely on Grandmother’s (or someone like her) knowledge or interpretation of what she remembered or what she thought her religious leader said, so we miss a lot of important details of these stories that are used against us. Those details are what get’s left out by the holly huddle when they try to thrown their belief system in our GLBTQ community face and those lack of details is what they used to hurt: Because if I can hurt you, I have power over you. But if you are ‘educated’ in what was really said, what those stories are really about, then you have power to take back your life, your faith, whatever…, and they lose. Again, you don’t have to blindly follow the ignorant. Educate yourself- that’s what the 95 theses were all about (another part of the story/history)- but that’s not in your Bible, but the man that came up with the 95 theses thoughts were important too: Your responsible for your own belief system- whatever it is.

As a "reformed Catholic" myself, it disappoints me that supposed "Christian" people still condemn love between two consenting adults. Frankly, The Church has no business even being involved in ANY form of civil legislation, immigration-focused or otherwise. As a previous post queried, whatever happened to the separation of Church and State? I also find it ironic that historically many religious groups immigrated to The United States for freedom of faith expression, yet condemn love and the expression of commitment betwen two same-gender adults. Who are they to judge our love? The Church (and organized religion) should keep to its own affairs and leave politics to The People. UAFA passage MUST be included in ANY comprehensive immigration reform bill. More than TWENTY other "civilized" countries worldwide -- many of those countries MUCH more faith-based than America -- allow same-gender couples the right to sponsor their partners for immigration. When will America do what's right?

People like Staver continue to oppose civil rights for gays because they make their money that way. They are either too lazy or too stupid to hold honest jobs so they scam people. My granddad warned me about buying pigs in pokes, and preachers are peddling pokes they can't show you much less any pig they claim is in there. Religion= legalized extortion.

What happened to Separation of Church and State? Why are the so called religious groups allowed to dictate which rights certain people are allowed to have over others? What happened to the right to love who you love! Not loving and fitting into a mould that pleases them? They call themselves Christians - I thought a Christian are supposed to love thy neighbour!!!!

Oh MichaelandFred, I didn't say that people here can't legitimately criticize the Dems, or that all Dems support lgbt rights, that would be just plain silly. But the fact remains that there are trolls working to manipulate opinion here. Read some of the recent posts here more critically, particularly on stories about Obama, DADT, or even gay icons, for ex. the avalanche of criticism of a story here on Sean Penn (because of his portrayal of Harvey Milk). Look it up in the archives. Rachel Maddow did an expose a couple of months ago on conservative foundations supported by big oil to manipulate public opinion against the global warming threat. It's a multi-million dollar advertizing campaign which doesn't discriminate between truth and lies so long as it works - and they have influenced the polls significantly. There is similarly an effort by anti-gay groups to sway the public in the so-called "culture war." It's not about you; don't be so defensive.

Hey Grandma Daisy, check out the article about Congressman Skelton, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, who opposes DADT repeal because parents would then have to discuss gay issues with their kids. The man's a Democrat. Stop calling those who disagree with your viewpoint trolls, or at the very least get your facts straight. We, the Democrats control the white house and both houses of congress. We don't NEED the Republicans to pass anything yet very little has been done. That means someone, or some(many's), on our side are voted against us in numbers large enough to block legislation. I'll repeat since you seem to be a little slow on the uptake. WE HAVE THE NUMBERS TO PASS LEGISLATION WITHOUT REPUBLICAN SUPPORT....if they wanted to. Take off your Ideology glasses and realize that there are many conservative Democrats who oppose our rights. These are the ones you should be blaming because it is they, not the Republicans, who are making the difference.
