No Expulsion for Antigay Graffiti

Southern Oregon University X390 (FAIR) | ADVOCATE.COM

Two students who vandalized a Southern Oregon University dorm with antigay slurs will not face expulsion, according to Fox 12 Oregon

Blake Adkins and Kevin Novotny must do community service and live off campus as punishment for defacing a gender-neutral dorm building's hallway with antigay phrases. Although the gender-neutral floor is not specifically for gay students, many gay students live on the floor that was vandalized.

The pair will do volunteer service at the Queer Resource Center, Women's Resource Center, and Multicultural Center at SOU. They will also have to attend a gay rights meeting.

When Adkins and Novotny were arrested in April, the students claimed the antigay graffiti was not intended to harass gay students because they did not know gay students lived on the dorm floor they vandalized. They later apologized for defacing the hallways.

had this been another community, yeah, there would have been punishments. But the only reason these boys are facing ANYTHING is because of those other communities that sacrificed and died fighting for equality. I know people would like anti-gay hate crimes to get more attention, but when you look at the timeline for gay rights, how long we've been fighting, how many support us and how many are open to the idea of support, we should be thankful that we're not starting out in the 1800's. So seriously, stop trying to compare injustices because it's a useless discussion

I also think they should get the BOOT. And then they should have to lick it! : )

Remember, they're probably gay (eventually). Someone who writes anti-black or anti-semitic graffiti isn't trying to desperately cover up secret African or Jewish urges in himself... ha ha...

I am sorry I don’t agree with the others here. If this happened to any other community they would have had their heads handed to them and then got the boot. I still think they should get the boot. Saying they didn’t know what they were doing was wrong does not cut it. These young adults are not a bunch of junior high students. If the parents were forced to do 100 hours of graffiti cleanup on campus, I bet these kids would figure it out real quick, and I bet they would never do anything like that again.

I think that the education that they'll get is a much better idea than simply kicking them out of school which would undoubtedly cause them to be more antigay. This way there's a chance that they'll be future allies. (But they should be compelled to clean up the graffiti, if they haven't already done so.)

Typical. If this had been racist or anti-Semitic graffiti, they'd have been kicked out. Of course, anything and everything anti-gay is considered "less offensive," "less serious," and "less important." It's a consistent pattern across the board.
