Huckabee Defends “Ick Factor” Phrase

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who sparked outrage this week with comments about an “ick factor” of same-sex marriage in a profile by The New Yorker, is defending his choice of words by invoking academia. The potential 2012 presidential candidate tried to distinguish the “ick factor,” which he called an “established phrase,” from the more judgmental word “icky,” and said that bright minds like philosopher Martha Nussbaum used the phrase first in conjunction with LGBT people.

In the profile by Ariel Levy in The New Yorker, Huckabee explained his opposition to marriage equality by saying, “I do believe that God created male and female and intended for marriage to be the relationship of the two opposite sexes. Male and female are biologically compatible to have a relationship. We can get into the ‘ick factor,’ but the fact is two men in a relationship, two women in a relationship, biologically, that doesn’t work the same.”

Huckabee defended his use of the phrase against widespread criticism in a statement Wednesday to Politico.

“Never once did I say ‘icky,’ as many blogs and less than credible news organizations have reported,’” he said.

According to Politico, Huckabee continued, “Former colleague of then Professor Obama from the University of Chicago’s Law School, Dr. Martha Nussbaum, has often made reference to the ‘ick factor’ in her professional writings and is credited with applying the phrase to the GLBT community. This phrase is not new. This phrase is not mine. More over, the phrase ‘ick factor’ was used as early as the late 1990’s and was just the subject of an entire article written on April 12 of this year — by Joseph Erbentraut — and he even put ‘Ick Factor’ in the title.”

Huckabee refused to apologize for his use of the phrase.

Nussbaum, a University of Chicago professor, explores how physical revulsion drives opponents of same-sex marriage in her new book, From Disgust to Humanity: Sexual Orientation & Constitutional Law.

d, Thanks for proving my point! You do not know me or anything about me except that you disagree with me, and you drew some erroneous conclusions. Most of the comments here about what kind of a person the Governor is, come from people who do not know him, or anything about him in reality. I do not know him personally, but from someone who worked with him closely, the Governor is a man of great integrity. Integrity is more important than intelligence or virtually any other trait a person can have, because a lot of smart, rich, good looking people are not very nice people.

"Male and female are biologically compatible to have a relationship." What about the poor veteran with an unfortunate war injury to the groin? Is he no longer able to marry a woman, since he is no longer 'biologically compatible'? What an idiot.

@ Casey from VT - Funny that Huckabee was told (by someone) to "cite" a pro-gay book he hadn't read as justification for an anti-gay remark... but thank you for a reminder to go and find Nussbaum's book!

    Comment:

James Carville, the Democratic strategist and adviser to Bill Clinton, also used the term "ick factor" (which however also describes his own marriage to Mary Matalin, the Republican strategist, or indeed anything about James Carville, because he looks like a fuckin alligator). But as several comedians have pointed out, if anti-gay folks like Huck really want gay men to stop having sex, they should encourage us to get married. That seems to work for straight guys.

Sane N Sober, save it for the meeting honey! If the conservatives and the Huckabees started attacking chain smoking, coffee consuming, alcohol resisting meeting goers. You'd be the first to retaliate and save yourself, your respect and your friends. Think about that and work on your 10th step!

To the commenter from Columbia: Huckabee is no longer a governor. He's merely than a tv personality at this time. And for someone like Huckabee-- who has compared homosexuality to incest, bestiality and pedophilia-- I can safely say that I know both the content of his intellect and his heart. I think you are the one who needs to look into the mirror.

Regarding Nussbaum's book - it's terrific. Carefully skewers the antigays on their own underdeveloped psyches.

    Comment:

Some here sit in judgment of Gov Huckabee, condemning his intellect and what is in his heart. Well, if their comments are any indication of intellectual prowess, they barely made it into the shallow end of the gene pool. Regarding what is in their heart, I can't say, but I can say that it is not possible to condemn someone else as judgmental, without being judgmental. So if you think you know what is in Gov Huckabee's heart, you better check the mirror, because that is only known to God and Gov Huckabee.

    Comment:

Heterosexual couples can marry even if they choose not to reproduce. The elderly, the infertile and the physically disabled can marry as long as they're hetero. So much for the "natural law" argument against gay marriage.
