"Repent" Signs Concern Gay Activists

REPENT X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

A gay rights group in Oklahoma City will contact city officials about signs posted near its promotional banners. The fliers read "Repent," and the Cimarron Alliance Foundation, an LGBT organization, believes it is the target of the statement, reports KFOR News.

Some residents believe the message could be a generalized religious warning, but the Cimarron Alliance disagrees. The "Repent" signs were posted only on city poles also bearing Cimarron pride banners, which gay activists believe is an unlikely coincidence.

"There's a sadness in that for me because it's saying that for some people, hatred remains a family or state value," said Cimarron executive director Scott J. Hamilton. "I don't believe that. I don't believe the general public feels that way."

I disagree pepa. You are correct if these signs were randomly put on poles across the city.... BUT they weren't, so the context applies. The person posting the repent signs targeted where gay activists put up their posters. So it's not that I come on to this website thinking, WHAT CAN I RANT ABOUT TODAY!?!? But when I see this... I know the religious activist extremist type, and I know I have done nothing to them but they will still never see the world from my shoes (or care to) and will most likely never fully accept my lifestyle, no matter how much good I bring to the world, and will continue to preach I need to REPENT to save my soul. Well if GOD is unwilling to forgive my tiny human mind (comparatively to God's knowledge) for following my heart and doing the best I can on this Earth, than I would rather not spend eternity with him anyway....

REPENT on a sign means nothing, unless of course you want to be offended.

Repent means "...to feel sorry, self-reproachful, or contrite for past conduct; regret or be conscience-stricken about a past action, attitude, etc.; to feel such sorrow for fault as to be disposed to change one's life for the better; be penitent." Maybe we can put a new spin on "repent." Maybe we can feel sorry or regretful about having been in the closet and feel such sorrow for that fault that we become disposed to change our lives for the better and come out. Repent everyone! (smile)

John, the convenient fact of the "love" of anti-gay christians is that it suger-coats a very real hatred. By saying you "love the sinner and hate the sin" you are presuming that homosexuality is a sin while denying the harm that you cause by making such a statement. And the beauty is, you don't have to accept responsibility for that hate because you can hide behind a book that you claim was written by God. But is God here to testify to that? NO. I don't care what you think God thinks about the gay people He created, because you can't prove to me that God said it.

To Scott J, thanks for adding to our knowledge of the Oklahoma situation. Congratulations on finally getting some media coverage... it's too bad the program didn't mention the struggle you had getting the permit in the first place. Also, let's look forward to the day when GLBT issues aren't relegated to the back page on anything but a slow news day!! As far as I know, the PrideFest here in SA received 0 coverage.

It would be nice to think that most people aren't homophobic, but just visit youtube or look at the vicious and violent anti-LGBT remarks that were posted in response to a story about LGBT Pride on Yahoo. Don't fool yourselves into thinking that we've won total acceptance, we've come a long way and still have a long way to go.

really?? you think it is about love?? you must not be gay. it is NOT out of love. Did it offer a church street address to go repent? or a hotline to call? I'll explain exactly what it means. It means "Say sorry, or you will be punished." It means "Repent, or you will burn in hell."

Having a sincerely-held religious belief, and exercising that belief (no matter how legitimate or misguided) by trying to warn someone of the what are believed to be the consequences of certain actions is not "hate." The warning ("repent"), regardless of whether it is an effective tactic (okay, let's stipulate that its not) could actually be motivated by love. A "no thank you" would be more fitting in such a case than histrionics or namecalling. Can't we love people with whom we disagree?

I don't know why such a silly sign would cause gays to have a boil-over. I think that the right thing to do would be to take down the signs (since most cities do not allow for unauthorized signage in public right of way areas) and not make it into an issue, because that is what these emasculated fruity homophobes want you to do, it is what drives them. So do us all a favor and just move on.
