The SF Chronicle reported that the police might have reason to believe the two (murderer/victim) may have known each other. The investigation continues. I understand why we, or any group that's been repressed, immediately jumps to hate crime, but it's not always the case. It's an assumption. That's why we investigate and then decide. Could be love, money, revenge or who knows. Still, it's very tragic. || Of course CA has the death penalty. The CA supreme court struck it down and the voters reinstated it. The CA supreme court used that example for why they would not overturn the voters with Prop 8. CA has delayed many executions because they said they did have what was needed to do it without undue whatever. Isn't that a joke. We pay a fortune for many people on death row, but also the death penalty has not proven it prevents crime. I thought Charles Manson was not in line because he actually did not commit any of the murders himself. His followers did all the work.

dear Shane, if it's tax money you're worried about, the death penalty costs tax payers much more money than keeping them alive in prison does. Remember that when you find yourself in a fit of rage and just happen to have a deadly weapon in your hand. On second thought, don't.

@Jon in Portland. Dear brother, I'm happy to let you know California DOES have the death penalty (lethal injection). Scott Peterson, who killed his wife Laci and unborn son, now sits on death row as he goes through the appeals process. By 'Mason', I presume you meant Charles Manson. He WAS sentenced to death; at that time, the gas chamber. Before he could be executed, however, SCOTUS weighed in and declared the death penalty; unconstitutional. That, automatically, commuted all death sentences nationwide, Mansons among them, to life in prison without parole. I presume this latest incident will turn out to be a 'hate crime'. This would increase the severity of the sentence; possibly resulting in a death sentence. I hope The Advocate follows up on this case. Be well, brother!

hate crime or not, some innocent young 19 year old is dead because of absolute stupidity. the shooter should get the death penalty and make it swift, no need to spend tax payer money on keeping him in jail for too long.

Patricia- If that were the case it were, you're looking at it backwards. They think it was coincidence that it was on Castro Street during Pride, had the victim been in the Sunset that motive would have been the same.

In a different article about this, it says that the victims were not the intended target and were accidentally caught in the crossfire. I don't think this was motivated by hate. I think the jackass just picked a much too crowded area in which to try and take out his rival.

How is it not a hate crime if the shooter deliberately targeted the crowd due to them being specifically LBGT? Just sayin'...
