London Mayor Supports Gay Marriage

BORIS JOHNSON X390

London mayor Boris Johnson has voiced his support for same-sex marriage. The conservative politician and journalist voiced his support while discussing London’s plans to host WorldPride in 2012, saying the event would be “the biggest ever.”

“If the Conservatives and Liberals can get together in a national coalition and settle their differences, I don't see why you can't have gay marriage,” he said.

Johnson was responding to a sign being carried in this year’s pride parade by gay rights activist Peter Tatchell. Tatchell told PinkNews.uk, "I'm very pleased. He took one look at it and said, 'why not?' I'm sure his support will add to the pressure to marriage equality."

Johnson is the highest-ranking Tory figure to support marriage equality, and according to reports, his stand on the issue seems to have evolved. He is quoted as having said same-sex marriage "can only ever be a ludicrous parody of the real thing.”

Mind you, Boris also made the tedious equation of same-sex marriage and bestiality back during the debate over U.K. civil partnerships. So either he's had a massive change of heart, or he's just realized that being the mayor of a major First World city necessitates having a broader voter base than being an MP with a conservative constituency. That or he's just looking to cause trouble for his frenemy, PM David Cameron, whom Boris would dearly love to see go down in flames if his Tory/Lib Dem coalition were to fracture. While the Lib Dems would probably go in for same-sex marriage, there's no shortage of Tories that would riot over the issue. Where Labour stands, on this as with everything else, is a mystery for them moment.

The reason why American conservatives wouldn't do it because ever since the 80's the conservatives have been hijacked by the religious right.
