Two Gay Men Robbed At Gunpoint in Atlanta

Two gay men were reportedly robbed at gunpoint while they were picnicking at Piedmont Park in Atlanta last week.  Rev. Josh Noblitt and his partner were approached around 9:45 p.m. on Friday by three young men who asked the couple, "Are y’all gay? Two men laying on a blanket. We ought to beat y’all for that," according the GA Voice.

Noblitt believed at first that the men were just verbally harassing the couple, but the event soon escalated. The three men walked away and later returned with a large stick.

“He started wielding the stick and they were demanding money,” Noblitt said.

The two men fought back and called 911, but were soon surrounded by eight to ten more men, one of whom allegedly had a gun. The man held a handgun to Noblitt's head and demanded money. Noblitt complied, saying "everything you want is on the blanket.”

An Atlanta police officer was stationed nearby and responded quickly to the call, apprehending six of the robbers, Noblitt said. The crime has not been classified as a hate crime but Carlos Campos, the public affairs manager for the Atlanta Police Department, said Monday that more information would be available as soon as possible.

If it wasn't racially motivated, why did they not target a black gay couple in the park?I'm sure there were plenty of black couples there. There was still daylight, so the argument that they should have been more aware because it was at night holds no merit.WHY?Because in Atlanta the assumption by blacks is that the whites have the money(even though TONS of affluent blacks live here, but mostly NOT inside the perimeter, what does that tell you?)and whites are easier targets who are less likely to be toting a weapon or to put up a defense than their black counterparts. It was obviously targeted and blacks need to take responsibility that they are more ethnocentric (racist) than any other race in America. No one today had any control over things that happened decades or centuries ago....so get over it! Every race in history for thousands of years has been enslaved and in many cases, treated worse, including white people (Roman aquaducts, Pyramids, Sex slaves,Great Wall,Holocaust labor camps).

I cannot believe the comments. Especially from people not in GA. I've looked at each person's city and I have been to pretty much all of them. Atlanta is not perfect but its not a backwards, horrible black ghetto that some are trying to portray it as. As a person of color I've experienced racism all over the US but never in Asia or South America and rarely in Europe. Their color, sexuality has nothing to do with this, every person responsible needs to held accountable. The part I really hate is the racism by some of the gay people. Stop judging people because they don't look like you and start focusing on being a good person. remember we are all people, all equal. Good people are good people and bad people are bad people. If you are a good person, YOU are no better than any other good person, regardless of their color, religion, sexuality. Get rid of your ISMs.

A crime is a crime, no matter what ethnicity is responsible. We should worry more about placing responsibility at the person's feet not at their ethnic group. Generalizing a group can lead to drastic negative beliefs. Why are we fighting? I thought it was for equal rights. Casting aspersion on a group of people is not going to push us forward.

Allan I really didn't understand what you were trying to say. I was simply pointing out that it doesn't matter what colour you are, you have no right to be a criminal, unemployed or not. If Black people are committing more crimes then more Black people should be prosecuted period. While this is a systematic problems when it comes down to it you shouldn't terrorize other people. I don't doubt that these men were targeted because they were gay, but the police don't care and these apes just need a good pistol whipping. I don't put my real name on a website like this, so I can be flamed and get spam. Sorry, what SHOULD my name be Allan, LEROY or JOHN HENRY or maybe some incomprehensible long African name. WTF. ATL is like the Clampetts after they hit oil, its the ghetto in a big city. And Blk people are extremely racist and ultra-conservative. So if these men were white it was probably because these apes were homophobic and racist.

EVERYONE in Atlanta gets robbed at gunpoint...doesn't matter who you are! I've lived here 3 times in the last 15 years and nothing has changed except that the blacks hate the whites more than ever and of course crime has increased dramatically. Weather isn't bad though...just sayin'.

Atlanta is a great city and a good city to live in if you are Gay. I have lived here for over 16 years and I have never had a problem. I even walked home to Virginia Highland from the Armory in the early 90s at 3 am. Bad things can happen to good people, at any place or time in this entire country. Should this have happen in our city and in this park? NO! People need to be more aware of there surroundings, and more active in their own safety. Piedmont Park is not a place I would ever choose to be at close to 10 pm at night. Like most urban cities it attracts unsavory folks after dark. Some of the other comments here are a little miss leading. The movement on Pride to later in the year was due severally factors, not just due to the availability of park due to restrictions on events. Pride in October at the park in Atlanta is far better than pride in June (Too Hot). It Atlanta is great, if not I would have chosen not to raise kids here with my partner. We are raising kids with no problems

fRANZ IN sEATTLE.... YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING RIGHT?..YOU'RE BLACK, AND YOUR NAME IS fRANZ? GIVE ME A BREAK.. lET ME PUMOP YOU UP. i'VE SPENT TIME WORKING IN AaTLANTA. i KNOW WHICH PARTS OF TOWN TO STAY OUT OF, AND MAINLY DOWNTOWN. vERY AGGRESSIVE BLACK TEENAGERS looking for trouble. My one visit was enough. I agree the unemployment problem then and now is outrageous. If these kids and adults had jobs, I don't think there would be a problem. Blacks in Georgia are discriminated because the schools do not teach them a TRADE. Anywhere there is UNEMPLOYMENT , there must be schools that will teach anyone a skill, and especially skills in demand. and as to your first comment, I disagree. BLACKS are the problem. Using the 'gay' subject is just another reason to rob and beat someone. There is a lot of anger in the Black community, mainly from unemployment. More crime today of all races due to unemployment...thats the key...good luck

Atlanta is a very ghetto city in a very homophobic state. I'm allowed to bash it because I used to live there. I also once had a car full of black guys laughing and pointing a gun at me while stopped at a red light near Georgia State University when I was 19, to them it was a joke. Even what is considered the gay-friendly area in Midtown is full of thugs who roam around the city like a pox. Outside the city walls gay visibility is virtually non-existent, but within the core you always have to worry about being shot! My gay friends in Atlanta are always telling me how great it is, but it's really not. There is a small urban enclave for LGBT folks, but they still don't have equal rights under the law, and they have to share space with thousands of common thugs whose grandmas should have spent less time in church and more time raising them to be decent people. It's a problem in so many cities.
