Pentagon Denies Bias in DADT Survey

DADT X390 (PHOTOS.COM) | ADVOCATE.COM

The Pentagon on Friday denied critics’ claims that a $4.5 million survey submitted to 400,000 troops as part of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” review process shows bias because questions pertaining to sharing showers and sleeping facilities with gay soldiers.

According to Reuters, Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell refuted the claims, saying, “Absolutely, unequivocally, I reject [the accusations of bias] as nonsense.”

Morrell cited concerns expressed by troops and said, "We think it would be irresponsible to conduct a survey that didn't address these kinds of [privacy-related] questions.”

Reuters reports that Morrell called the study designed by the firm Westat “scientific” and added, “We’re not playing games here.”

The 103-question survey devotes many questions to demographic information, but includes inquires such as "If 'don't ask, don't tell' is repealed and you are assigned to bathroom facilities with an open bay shower that someone you believe to be a gay or lesbian Service member also used, which are you most likely to do?"

Possible answers include doing nothing, consulting a chaplain or other authority figure, or using the shower at a different time than the service member believed to be gay or lesbian.

And now he's dismantling the MMS and increasing oversight of our energy policy so oil spills can't be blamed on government deregulation. President Obama pushed an overhaul of the Student Loan program and cancelled the F22 program which was irrelevant to both wars we're fighting. As if all of this isn't already impressive for half a term, he's also set to end "Don't Ask Don't Tell," repeal DOMA, and will probably get to energy reform before his first term is up. Please don't write that this President isn't getting things done, Doug. This President is accomplishing his agenda and doing exactly what he was elected to do. Voting for those who would deny our rights completely is sure not the answer.

President Obama has tackled Wall Street reform which politicians have been trying to do for 60 years. It's passing now. He pushed for and signed healthcare reform into law. He passed the stimulus bill which saved our economy from the brink of destruction and pumped 100 billion into the national infrastructure. It contained billions for science and tech research including renewable energy. In fact, this President even funded an experimental energy research agency Bush created but never actually funded. He also gave a giant investment to NASA and the National Science Foundation. President Obama expanded state health insurance for children and signed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay act. He negotiated and signed a nuclear arms deal with Russia to reduce both countries arsenels by a third and pushed for a global nonproliferation treaty. The Hate Crimes Protection Act that's been stuck in Congress for years? Passed. Food and Drug regulation of Big Tobacco? Passed.

This whole episode is a farce. The Pentagon is full of liars. It just goes to show how democratic this "democracy" is. It makes one wonder why anyone would want to defend the policies of this country.

shankiwa is no plant- she is expressing the frustration MANY of us feel- the Dems have had overwhelming majorites for nearly 2 years and have squandered it at every turn- trying to appease Rep, watering down legislation to get them on board to no avail....Bush got twice as much passed in the same time with significantly less numbers (SHITTY things, but things passed nonetheless....) Obama has doen the truly impossible- he has made Goerge Bush look like an astutue politican. Even if the Dems retain Congress, their numbers will shrink- if they couldn't pass ENDA, etc with the numbers they have now- they NEVER WILL!

Daniel (New Hope PA), your point is a variation of one I have maintained for years. The ONLY reason that non-gay male servicemembers want to keep DADT is that they fear being objectified they way they have objectified women (remember Tailhook) for decades. Well, Fraidy-Cats, get over yourselves and grow up. We have other things to think about in combat and in training for combat than your little pee-pees and your tinier minds.

Vote for Democrats, so that we can rebalance the SCOTUS, but withhold your money from the DEMs UNTIL they deliver the goods! Give it to HRC or some other progressive organization in the meantime.

Shanikwa the Republican plant, if that's your real name, you should know that this President promised to end DADT and to repeal DOMA. Both are in progress. Voting Republican is only going to give the oppostion the tools they need to deny our rights. No one should be stupid enough to think that we're going to secure same-sex marriage rights by voting in the christian talibanists. The best chance we have is to support a Democratic president who will appoint liberal justices to the SCOTUS. I believe that with Romer v Evans, Lawrence v Texas, and now Gill v. Office of Personnel Management and Massachusetts v. USDHHS (2010) that legal precdent is building toward equality. Do not waiver and vote for a Republican. That will only succeed in hastening a Constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage altogether and delegitimize our existence for the next century. Justice moves slowly but on this issue, there's only one option.

The solution to all of this is easy for me, I voted in 2008 for all Democrats and donated money to all Democrats because I EXPECTED to see RESULTS with my vote and money. Democrats are in the MAJORITY for a reason right now. If I do not see results BEFORE the Nov 2010 election, especially the repeal of DADT BEFORE the election, Democrats can suffer the consequences of not getting a dime or vote from myself or many of my LGBT friends. We are DONE playing games and being manipulated by politicians! GET DADT REPEALED NOW!!!!!!!!!!! If Dems don't believe this, just test us and when you are all voted out of office then maybe the party will learn its lesson.
