17 Dead at Gay Party in Mexico

MEXICO MAP TORREON X390

A party in the northern Mexican city of Torreón that was organized by a gay group on Facebook ended in a bloodbath early Sunday morning when gunmen opened fire, killing 17 men and women and injuring 18 others.

The Los Angeles Times reports it was one of the highest single-incident death tolls since the beginning of Mexico's raging drug war in 2006. President Felipe Calderon launched a military-led offensive against powerful narcotics cartels that December.

An invitation to the birthday party at the Italia Inn in Torreon was sent out by a gay group but advertised as being open to all. Authorities at the scene raised “the possibility of an anti-gay hate crime,” but suspect drug traffickers were more likely involved.

Photos from the party show “toppled white plastic chairs, scattered musical instruments and cups and plates and shoes strewn on a blood-splattered floor alongside a tented pool. Empty beer bottles were lined up on tabletops; bullet holes punctured the walls.”

No hateful comments people, OK and for those who do, maybe you should get shot and killed at a party with your friends, because even though these people are gay, they are human beings and that's the first you would've seen besides their sexuality, they are our brother's and sister's.

Personally I love Mexico, I've been to Cozumel, Acaplulco, Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, and Costa Maya. Mexico is great and so are the people. Don't let the violence occurring at the U.S. border mar your opionion of the whole country. Thinking like that is incredibly stupid. Just because some Americans think that Canadians live in igloos and that we live in an endless winter am I to assume that all Americans are horrendously ignorant unintelligent slack jawed brother cousins?

Daniel in Mexico; This is the only site I have heard this was a gay party. All other news outlets in the US only talk about 17 killed and refer to it as probably drug related. If it was a hate crime, it is a big one. Be careful and good luck.

This is curious... On the mexican news the fact that this party was actually a gay party was never told. That makes me think it's more likely to be a hate crime than another result of the so-called "war" by our dear (and 100% incompetent) president Calderon.
