Gaga Takes on Westboro

LADY GAGA 200910 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church have protested Lady Gaga before, but when church members picketed outside her concert in St. Louis Saturday night, the pop star fired back.

Lady Gaga took to her website and to Twitter before the concert after learning of the planned protest. Before the show, members of the church stood outside the theater with signs reading, "God hates Lady Gaga.”

“At the risk of drawing attention to a hateful organization, I would like to make my little monster fans aware of a protest being held outside the Monsterball in St. Louis tonight," Gaga wrote. "Although we have had protesters before, as well as fundamentalists at the show, this group of protesters are hate criminals and preach using lewd and violent language and imagery that I wish I could protect you all from."

Gaga wrote that members of the church are “violent and dangerous” and urged fans not to engage them in conversation. Following the concert, she tweeted: "Love and hate met in St. Louis. And love outnumbered the hate, in poetic thousands. Hate left. But love stayed. + Together, we sang."

Members of the church had planned to protest Gaga’s performance at the Fox Theater in St. Louis in January, but harsh weather kept them from turning out.

I support Lady Gaga's stand on this and I regret that this happened in my hometown. I just have one little correction to offer in regards to the concert venue. Lady Gaga did perform here at the Fox Theatre in January but the concert on July 17 took place at Scottrade Center, which is where the St. Louis Blues hockey team plays. Just wanted to clear that up so that everyone knew that Gaga performed at a much bigger venue this time around. Thanks.

I hope Westboro shows up at her Twin Cities concert. I would love to give them a piece of my mind as I walk into the concert as I walk in to love Lady Gaga just like God does.

The more I learn about her, she is a really admirable person as well as a great performer. Phelps' weird obsession with her is his usual CLOSET CASE thing going on, but Gaga is probably correct that the Westboro group is potentially violent.

This is a beautiful women with a pure heart. How could anyone hate her? Gaga is great. The WBC is most likely jealous because they don't have the amount of followers that she does.

James, I agree. as far as Gaga, I really just recently started listening to her and I have liked what I heard. As far as Westboro, Fred Phelps and the rest of his followers just need to be taken out.

Hey Ben, yeah you are right. Man you are just too smart for me... Yeah, I'm posting stuff and then going back and denying it!!! WOW that is really accomplishing something. LOL. Well at least I have the balls to post under a name that is recogizable enough for you to want to pose as me to try to make me look bad. The thing is, I really don't care all that much. I know what I post and anyone who has read my real posts knows that the bs you are writing when you pose as me, isn't what I really think. Believe me, I will stand behind anything that I post whether it is popular or not. I will never deny anything that I write. The Advocate has already removed the other posts you wrote. I'm glad that I have riled you up enough to make you pose as me :-) Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
