Repub Group: Invalidate Tammy Baldwin's Nomination Papers

A Wisconsin Republican group has called on state election officials to invalidate the election nomination papers of Rep. Tammy Baldwin, alleging she no longer lives in the district she has represented since 1999.

Charla Halverson, president of the Young Republicans of Dane County based in Madison, Wisc., said Baldwin, one of three openly gay Congressional representatives, lists her campaign office as her address instead of her voting address, the Associated Press reports.

“Tammy Baldwin has always been a blind supporter of liberal interests," Halverson said in a statement.  "However, she is now demonstrating reckless disregard for the voters of the [Wisconsin] Second Congressional District by not even bothering to conceal the fact that she no longer lives in the district she was elected to represent.”

A state election official said that Baldwin has been allowed to use her campaign office address because she received death threats during her first campaign more than a decade ago.

In an e-mail to the Republican group, Lez Get Real executive editor Paula S. Brooks called out the group's statement as an attention-seeking "cheap political trick."

"Hun… as to why you’d need free PR… could it be because you are backing a candidate who has only managed to raise just over 30k maybe?" Brooks wrote. "Can’t buy much ad time with that... now can you?"

Give me a break!!!! The Wisconsin Statutes REQUIRE a candidate’s address, no if ands or buts about it....!!! Oh yea, I forgot the rule of law is not important to “progressives”.

This is aa prime example of a desparate group seeking publicity. The Republicans are demnstrating the same "lock step: goose step" thining that ended democracy in Germany in the 1930's.

If this is really what Young Republicans want to be known for, I say keep it up. It will bring more people to the Democrats.

If I'm reading this correctly, she lives in the district she represents, but lists her campaign office as her address for her own safety. The Repubs are trying to make this into something totally different than it is. Just when you think they can't stoop any lower, something like this happens.

Did you read the article? Like where it said: "A state election official said that Baldwin has been allowed to use her campaign office address because she received death threats during her first campaign more than a decade ago,"

The article states: "A state election official said that Baldwin has been allowed to use her campaign office address because she received death threats during her first campaign more than a decade ago?" So what exactly do you want people to do?

As the article above states: "A state election official said that Baldwin has been allowed to use her campaign office address because she received death threats during her first campaign more than a decade ago." So she does live in the district, she just doesn't give out her home address so Republicans - who will stoop to anything to win - don't publicize her home address so she gets used for target practice. Why is this so hard to understand?

The constitution does not require anything regarding residence for a U.S. representative other than that he or she be an inhabitant of the state he/she represents. Period. The Supreme Court has already ruled that states may not impose more stringent requirements (e.g. term limits). Baldwin is perfectly legally representing any district in Wisconsin as long as she is an inhabitant of Wisconsin. Now, some people may prefer that their representative live in their district, to get a better feel for residents' views. But there is absolutely no legal requirement that they do so.

if she doesn't live/have a valid address of residence in the district- that's kind of it, isn't it? I like Baldwin- but you should live in the district you represent
