Gay Candidate’s Signs Defaced With Antigay Graffiti

SCOTT GALVIN DEFACED SIGN X390 (GALVIN CAMPAIGN) | ADVOCATE.COM

In the past few days several of Florida gay congressional candidate Scott Galvin’s campaign signs have been found defaced, spray-painted with the word fag.

According to theWashington Blade, the signs were taken down after Galvin's office received calls from residents. “It’s impossible to know who’s doing it,” explains Derek Newton, a consultant for the campaign. According to Newton, the Miami police have been contacted and the campaign is considering further action.

A councilman for North Miami, Galvin is campaigning for the Democratic nomination in Florida’s August 24 primary.

lets look at with some logic, The man is in Fl. he is a Democrat, and gay , What did you think would be the outcome , in a state , where the mean age is 100, it is the capital of redneck , bible belt America, the home of Anita bryant and her biggest supporter back in those days her employer the orange growers, the Gov. is/was a Bush, and the majority of voters are with the GOP. Here's my guess, they will never find anyone who did this defacing and if they do nothing will happen to them. It's the south , this is how they play. A gay person with any sense would leave , if everyone who was gay did the south would be crushed. Those left would be no great loss to the nation.

It is interesting to consider the power that names carry. In the Harry Potter series, most everyone is afraid to say the name of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. But the hero of the story, good old Harry, is taught by his mentor Dumbledore to speak the name itself -- Lord Voldemort. I think this puts Harry in the mindset to confront an evil that everyone else pretends does not exist. Perhaps there is something to consider here in regards to racist or homophobic names or any other kind of slurs. I would much rather see these words spoken and written openly instead of pushed off into a dark corner.

None in Canada: Your comments have nothing to do with Mark's point. Instead of commenting on the content, you attack the poster personally. If you have something intelligent to say, do so in a civil manner. I'm sick of seeing derogatory words printed in the media. I don't think Mark needed to print either one any more than the Advocate needed to print the one they did. Both could have starred out characters to indicate the intended word without offending anyone. However, as Mark points out, the media, gay and straight, has a double standard when it comes to printing racist or misogynistic words as opposed to homophobic words. It's a shame the media isn't leading the way in demonstrating that language is important.

BIG F****ING DEAL. I saw Bush/Cheney signs defaced with worse. Good thing he's still not hung in effigy like some gay folks did to someone they don't like.

Mark: I do not think that you are an active racist but I do think that you are a sad and lonely individual with a lot of rage. And I do think that you do harbor hateful feelings. The fact that you used the N-word and the F*g shows that you are an inconsiderate ass who probably pushed kids in the playground when they wouldn't get off the merry-go round fast enough. Because you can't have things you way, no one else should be left in peace. This post had nothing to do with race but you "took it there" for no other reason than to be a drama queen and provocateur. Put a bit of consideration into your posts next time...

I can't speak for others Mark but you make a valid point. It does get tiresome doesn't it. As for the Christo-Facist Rethuglicans who did this......oh please, is there any doubt? as for them, well, just remember this, Karmic payback like some drag queens is a bitch. Gays should show their support and I encourage any revenge seekers to hold back from defacing his opponents signs. Why wallow in the mud with these kind of people. The best way to beat them, is to not be like them, but show that we are above the fray.
