Comic-Con Fans Thwart Westboro Protest

GOD LOVES GAY ROBIN X390 (IO9.COM) | ADVOCATE.COM

Fred Phelps took his group of hate-mongering protesters to San Diego’s Comic-Con on Thursday, only to be met with a 50-strong group of Jedis, robots, aliens, and other costumed counter protesters.

The array of brandished signs parodied Westboro’s traditional "God hates fags" messages. Among the slogans were “Kill all humans,” “God hates Jedi,” “All glory to the hypno-toad,”and “God loves gay robin.” According to Comic Alliance, the counterprotesters also led cheers of “What do we want?” “Gay sex!” “When do we want it?” “Now!”

The church members’ demonstrations were ultimately drowned out by the Comic-Con crowd, diffusing Westboro’s messages of hatred with a little laughter and a lot of creativity.

I've counterprotested against these creeps once when they came to my hometown of Frederick, MD to protest a gay bishop/pastor (forget which one) at a liberal Episcopalian church. I had only found out about the counterprotest that day but I knew I wanted to be a part of it. We stood there with signs and yelled back at them as they tried to bring hate to the streets of downtown Frederick. It didn't work though; we were resilient. Something crazy that happened was, as they were trying to leave, they were chased by some of our crazier counterprotesters...something I'm not proud of witnessing. Some of the chasers got arrested by the cops, and all I could do was run and follow them as they chased them to their car. We crowded the street as they tried to leave, and eventually the cops had to break us up to let the car drive away. All in all a great day, and something I will never forget. Let's continue to fight back against these douchebags, shall we? :)

Ahh, I love any situation that gives those horrible Westboro people a taste of their own medicine. If there's anyone who can do it right, it's a bunch of overly sarcastic costumed nerds :D

@B Waller...Tolerance for WHOM? Could you possibly mean those bigoted idiots at Westboro Baptist Church? If you do mean tolerance for them, you must have just pulled your head out of your ass and don't know what's going on .... Sheeeeesh....If you mean the Comic Con people, they don't need our tolerance - we're already 100% behind them. You really must admit that the WBC is truly "unbelievable."

@wes --they get their money because churches aren't taxed. Even though 98% of the Westboro Baptist Church congregation are all relatives of Fred Phelps (says something about inbreeding doesn't it?), they are allowed to be tax exempt as a church. We need to start taxing all churches like we do corporations and businesses. These so called churches should lose their tax exempt status the minute they donate time, money, or protesters for a political cause. Repeal the Religious Tax Exemption laws!!

@Rej: This isn't just A Comic-Con. This is basically the Oscars, Tonys, and Grammys all rolled into one of the comic convention world. While it used to be just for comics, over the last decade, the Con has turned into a multi-media event bringing in the SF and fantasy communities (Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Star Trek, to name a few). There are literally hundreds of comics conventions going on across the US every year, but, at present, SDCC is THE Con. (Major genre films get early screenings at San Diego--frequently with the major stars, instead of the "lesser" players.) Westboro obviously knows how much media attention SDCC can get which was a major factor in the hate group's decision to "protest." (As to the LGBT presence, most of the bigger West Coast cons have as much of an LGBT presence as SDCC. The only difference is San Diego's sheer size.)

I believe Westboro is protesting because of the LGBT centered booths and displays at Comic Con this year. Damn, if there was anything that could have made me want to be at Comic Con this year even more, sticking it to Westboro was it. Go nerds!

A Comic-Con? They are protesting at a COMIC-CON?! Do these people have no common sense at all. People who attend such events tend to be a bit less restrictive in their thinking. (You have to be to suspend your disbelief to believe a man can fly, crawl up walls, create a heart-sized reactor to power a high-tech suit of armor or use willpower to manuplate cosmic emerald energy with a ring.) They thought people like this were going to spend a lot of time wondering who is sleepiong with who? They obviously haven't gotten one of the underlying meanings of "X-Men".

So they are protesting comic book figures now? If I were not a poor jobless person, I would investigate HOW this group gets its money to run a score of people all over the country continiously like they do. Do the attorneys within the family really get jobs in Law Firms that would want them on staff, considering all the ill will they bring? Are there outside donors? If so, who? Enquiring minds want to know!

I remember when the Westboro 'cult' went to San Francisco, years ago, to protest the funeral of Randy Shilts. After waiting for them to set-up their hate signs, etc., they were PELTED with raw eggs and water balloons by those waiting to get to the funeral. Their 'protest' lasted 30 SECONDS, before they packed up and headed for the airport. The cops, wisely stood by and did nothing.
