Target Contributes to Antigay Politician

TARGET MINNESOTA X390

Target, the LGBT-friendly department store chain, has contributed $150,000 to Minnesota Forward, a political action committee that supports Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, an opponent of gay marriage, reports NBC Bay Area. Emmer, who says "I believe marriage is the union between one man and one woman," received the money for TV ads. Website SFist reports that Emmer is also friends with controversial musician Bradlee Dean, of the Christian rock band called You Can Run But You Cannot Hide. Dean was recently quoted saying that Muslim countries that execute LGBTs are "more moral than even the American Christians." Target, whose company headquarters is located in Minneapolis, released a statement that says, "Target supports causes and candidates based strictly on issues that affect our retail and business interests."

Hey Columbo.. read the article.. it has nothing to do with support for gay marriage.. they are associated with a group who thinks it's moral to excecute gays.. catch up

My e-mail to Target corp - post yours too. http://www.target.com/gp/help/display-contact-us-form.html?displayLink=tci "I was saddened to learn of your substantial contribution to Minnesota Forward. With your corporate diversity policies, I had always considered your stores a friendly and inclusive place to shop. But this seems very mean spirited and divisive. Until its cleared up, I, and my facebook community not to mention real world community have regretfully vowed to redirect our dollars to K-Mart. I'll be watching Advocate.com for new regarding this seemingly dual personality."

Below is Target's unsatisfactory response to my inquiry about their contribution: "Target has long believed that engaging in civic activities is an important and necessary element of operating a national retail business. What's more important than any one candidate's stance on a particular issue is how we nurture thoughtful, long-term growth in the state of Minnesota. Our support of causes and candidates from both parties who will make job creation and economic growth a top priority. We operate best when working collaboratively with legislators on both sides of the aisle. In fact, if you look at our Federal PAC contributions year to date, you will see that they are very balanced between Republicans and Democrats. Target has a large stake in Minnesota's future, which is why it is so important to be able to provide jobs, serve guests, support communities and deliver on our commitment to shareholders." I grew up in Minnesota in the days when "Dayton's" meant top class in quality, service, and community responsiblity. Target was born from Dayton's. The Dayton family has drifted off, sold off the flagship line (Dayton's) and was left with the explosive growth of Target. As best I know, the Dayton children are not involved with the company and we are left with non-Dayton family people minding the store, so to speak. Like so many things in Minnesota, "Minnesota Nice" has left the building. It is sad to see something done so well turn into something so American (as in capitalist, the only important thing). All those Target places with lots of gay supportive environments will slowly change. Sad. The company response (supporting anyone who will make them richer) supports the idea that Minnesota Nice is a thing of the past; that does not bode well for things to come.

People should also write the Hudson Bay Company in Canada and ask them how it plans on responding to their parent company support antigay politicians in the U.S. I also urge any Canadians to boycott HBC - we don't have Target up here.

Looks like I have to boycott Target and The Hudson Bay Company now (HBC is owned by target). I wonder if I can still return all of the Olympic clothing they made.

Guft cards hold funds in an account where they gain interest until used, so it would hurt target more to use the gift card ASAP!

"Um, isn't Barrack Obama against gay marriage too? What's the difference between Target supporting a politician in Minnesota who is against gay marriage and lots of gay folks supporting Barrack Obama??!!!" -- The difference is that you wish to be a disingenuous moron. This MN candidate is actively campaigning against gays and lesbians in a defamatory manner, and you can bet he doesn't stop just at actively opposing same sex marriage rights. The Obama Administration has done more for the queer community than any other, achieving many breakthroughs, with more in process (even if it's not enough.) Everyone understands that national Democrats have to hedge on highly controversial marriage equality because a significant proportion of the national electorate is comprised of sexually disordered talibangelicals.

My only other option is Wal-Mart, and you know their reputation on gay rights and worker's rights. Target received a 100 on HRC's Best Places to Work and Corporate Equality index,so I believe they are committed to gay rights. However, they are a public company and are ultimately responsible to their shareholders (and getting pro-business representatives elected). That being said, I think Target needs to answer to it's loyal gay and lesbian customers about this issue.
